Wins over North
Gaston, Ashbrook

Kings Mountain’s Devin
Thompson wasted little time mak-
ing a successful switch from foot-
ball to basketball.
The 6-4, 220-pound Moun-
taineer senior completed an All-
Conference football season on
Friday night and with just two

in 21 points Tuesday night to lead
the Mountaineers to a 74-66 win
over North Gaston. Thompson hit
all 10 of his shots from the floor.
Thompson got plenty of scor-
ing help from Santonio Poole with
15 points but the Mountaineer de-
fense had to fight off a hot shoot-
ing performance by North
Gaston’s Octavious Robson in the
fourth quarter.
Robson scored 18 of his game-
high 34 points in that eight-minute
span after the Mountaineers built a
54-36 lead.
The Mountaineers were suc-
cessful in hitting several key free
throws down the stretch to seal the
win.
The Mountaineers fought off
another determined Gaston
County team Wednesday night at
Parker Gym, edging Ashbrook 60-
57 to run their record to 6-2.
The Mountaineers held the
Green Wave to just five points in
the third quarter and took a 49-40
lead into the final eight minutes.
Ashbrook cut the lead to three
with a minute to go but couldn’t
get any closer. .
Poole led the Mountaineers
with 17 points. Zach Hayes added
14, Thompson 13 and Brian
- Brown 9. Hayes grabbed eight re-
bounds and Thompson had five,
. and Poole dished out seven assists
and Hayes four. Lawrence Miller
scored 18 points for Ashbrook.
The Mountaineers were sched-
uled to play at East Gaston last
night. They will compete in the
Cleveland County Classic at
Shelby High on December 29-31
with their first game against Berry
Academy on Dec. 29 at 3 p.m.

SWC Players of the Year

Kings Mountain High was well-
represented on fall sports All-South-
western 2A/3A Conference teams
announced last week.
Football star Michael Roberts re-
peated as the SWC Player of the Year
and second-year head coach Greg
Lloyd was named Coach of the Year.
Jordan Doty was named Player of the
Year in volleyball, and Justin Boyd
earned the honor in cross country.
Roberts broke five school offense
records during KM’s championship
football season. Lloyd became the first
KMHS football coach to be selected
Coach of the Year since Ron Massey
in 1998.
Roberts was joined on the All-Con-
ference team by running back Joe
Chambers, tight end Devin Thomp-
son, wide receiver Terrance Young, of-
fensive lineman Joseph Haskett, de-
~ fensive linemen Thomas James and
Jiris Toney, and linebackers JT Put-
nam and Torrey Belcher. Young and
Belcher are juniors and will return
next season.
Shelby defensive end Quevalas
Murray was named the Defensive
Player of the Year and the Lions’
Turner Almond was named Place-
kicker of the Year. Burns’ Patrick Fish
was voted Punter of the Yéar.
Doty was joined on the All-Confer-
ence volleyball team by teammates
Sarah Fedyschyn, Chasiti Falls, Haley
~Hoyle and Tiara McClain. The Lady
Mountaineers won the conference
championship for the fourth year in a

R-S Central’s Greg Wright was
voted Coach of the Year. '
Boyd, who finished first in the an-
nual SWC championship meet, was
the only Mountaineer on the All-Con-
ference cross country team. R-S Cen-
tral’s Andy Dorsey was named Coach
of the Year.
Kings Mountain’s Caroline Baker
was named to the girls team. John
Champney of Shelby was Coach of
the Year and Shelby’s Gracie Blackley
was Runner of the Year.
-KM’s Ariel Martin, Diana Phantha-
lack and Casey DeVane were named
to the All-SWC women’s tennis team.
Hillary Lutz of Shelby was Player of
the Year and Darryl Thompson of
Burns was Coach of the Year.
Tanner Deaton was the only KM
player named to the All-Conference
soccer team. Turner Almond of Shelby
was Player of the Year and David
Steeves of Shelby was Coach of the
Year.
3 locals compete in AAU nationals
Danville, Alabama was
the site for the 2008 AAU
National Championships. It
is also home of the Oakville
Indian mounds where over
2,000 years ago the Copena
Indians, named for their use
of copper and galena, were
prolific mound builders.
Over 1,000 runners took
part in the event which
toured the site where pre-
historic Indians, who were
primarily farmers and
hunter-gatherers, also en-
gaged in ritual burials. Their
dead were often encased in
a putty mixture of clay, ash
and crushed shells and en-
closed in a large earthen
mound that rises out of the
ground.
The runners raced past
several: of the more than 20
mounds en route to the fin-
ish line which was located
at the base of the largest
woodland mound in the
area. This mound stands 27
feet high and covers 1.8
acres at the base and over 1
acre at the top. This massive

structure was probably con-
structed by carrying one
basket at a time from the
Oakville pond area to the
mound over 300 yards
away.
Running seemed to be a
simple task in comparison
to the massive structure
built by hand so long ago.
Justin Boyd, competing
in the first race of the day,
finished 47th in the Young
Men’s SK with a time. of
17:54. Jared Boyd, compet-
ing in the Intermediate
Boys 5K, finished 89th with
a time of 19:26.
Caroline Foster, compet-
ing in'the Primary Girl’s
2K, finished 72nd with a
time of 13:04. Collin Foster
finished 68th in the Midget
Boy’s 3K in 13:56.
Justin Boyd will travel to
Virgnia Saturday to com-
pete in the USA Track and
Field national Cross Coun-
try Championships.
Swimmers
Asheville swept Kings
Mountain in a non-confer-
ence swim meet Wednesday
at Neisler Natatorium.
The Asheville girls won
112-108 and the boys 123-
108.
Megan Burns led the KM
girls with first places in the
200 freestyle (2:29.37) and
the 100 backstroke (1:14.86).

Kings Mountain High’s
girls basketball team
dropped two more games
during the past week and
carried a 1-8 record into last
night’s game at East Gas-
ton.
The Lady Mountaineers
fell to North Gaston 54-45
Tuesday night in Dallas,
and then dropped a 47-41
game to Ashbrook at home
on Wednesday.
Kings Mountain got off
to a fast start and led the
Lady Wildcats 26-21 at
halftime. The KM five were
limited to six points in the
third quarter as the Lady
Wildcats took command 37-
27.
Jordan Doty led the KM
attack with 17 points, four
rebounds and four steals.
Caroline Chambers added
13 points, two rebounds and
three steals, and Evan
Bragg had nine pints, one
assist and one steal.
Kings Mountain led
early against Ashbrook, but
again fell behind in the third
period and ended up losing
47-41. They did make a run
in the fourth quarter, cutting
the Ashbrook lead to 38-37
with 2 122 minutes remain-
ig, but the Green Wave hit
key shots down the stretch
to seal the win.
Rasheida Dimetros had
one of her best games of the
year for the Lady Moun-
taineers with 10 points. Car-
oline Chambers added nine.

JV girls run record to 5-1
Kings Mountain’s JV
girls basketball team con-
tinued its fine start Wednes-
day night at home with a
38-13 victory over Ash-
brook.
Brittnee Roberts scored
15 points, Akua Adams 12
and Kayla Ward six as the
Lady Mountaineers ran
their record to 5-1 heading
into a game last night at
East Gaston.
Kings Mountain again
played tremendous defense,
shutting out Ashbrook in
the second period. The
Lady Mountaineers led 14-
5 after the first quarter, 21-5
at halftime and 33-10 going
into the fourth quarter.
On Tuesday night, the
KM ladies defeated North
Gaston 31-12 with Roberts
scoring 14 points, Ward five
and Karina Ebeling four.
Kings Mountain led 10-
2 after the first quarter, 18-4
at halftime and 20-8 going
into the fourth period.
The JV boys won their -
second game of the season
Tuesday at North Gaston,
26-7, holding the Wildcats
to two points each in the
first, second and fourth
quarters, and just one point
in the third.
Caleb Hines led the
Mountaineers with eight
points and Michael Thomp-
son added five.
Wednesday night, the JV
Mountaineers appeared set
to win their third game but
saw Ashbrook storm from
behind in the second half
for a 34-23 win.
Kings Mountain led 17-
-12 at intermission but was
outscored 9-6 in the third
quarter and 13-3 in the
fourth.

points and Caleb Hines
seven for the Mountaineers.

Cline Tate was the only
winner for the Mountaineers,
taking the 100 breast stroke in
1:16.29. Joe Gladden finished
second in 1:18.80.
Other second place fin-
ishes included Kyle Griffin in
the 200 freestyle. ‘Gladden in
the 200 individual medley,
Hogan Sellers in the 50 free,
Ben Hardee in the 100 fly,
and Tate in the 100 free.

Forestview on December 18
at 5:30.
Football awards
night Jan. 29
The Mountaineer Club
will host its first annual
Awards Night for the Kings
Mountain High School
football teams on Thursday,
January 29 at 6:30 p.m. at
B.N. Barnes Auditorium.
Trophies will be pre-
sented to numerous football
players.
Pete Lembo, head foot-
ball coach at Elon College,
will be the guest speaker.
The event is free and
open to the public.
