Other winners for the Moun- taineers were Steven Byrd, Matt Hord, Austin Cantrell, Josh Ha- raszkiewicz, JT Putnam and Jiris Toney. “Bennett did a great job stepping up for us,” said Coach Kenny Bridges. “Kings Mountain and North Gaston have always battled in years past, so to have a freshman came through to win for us at the end was very exciting. We also had some big wins from our football players, who have just been out at practice for a couple of days. These football players are definitely going to help us this season. The recent playoff run has really given them a lot of confidence, and that confi- dence is contagious. “Our practices are definitely going to be more intense now be- cause we have the conference sea- . son just around the corner.” Kings Mountain travels to Ash- brook Saturday for the Green Wave Duals. Belcher wins Freedom Patriot Invitational Kings Mountain junior Torrey Belcher went 4-0 with four first pe- riod pins to win his weight division in last weekend’s Freedom Patriot Invitational in Morganton. “Torrey is a very talented kid,” said KM Coach Kenny Bridges. “He is very strong. He needs to work on his conditioning because he can be as good as he wants to be? Jiris Toney placed third for the Mountaineers. “Jiris made an early mistake which cost him the match,” Bridges said. “He will learn from the error, which will drive him to get better. He, too, can have a great year.” Other Mountaineers with strong finishes were Ty Schultze fourth, Gary Bennett fifth, Steven Byrd fifth, Quincey Toms sixth, Josh Ha- raszkiewicz sixth, Dustin Stone. . fifth and JT Putnam fifth. KMHS makes grade in Best High Schools By EMILY WEAVER EDITOR Kings Mountain High School has received its second consecutive bronze award and recognition as one of America’s Best High Schools in the recent “U.S. News & World Report.” The magazine “analyzed aca- demic and enrollment data from more than 21,000 public high schools to find the very best across the country,” according to us- news.com, using data from 2006-07 school year. The top schools are placed into gold, silver, bronze or honorable mention categories. KMHS is one of only 1,321 public high schools to be honored with the bronze award. After receiving the same honor last year, Principal Ronny Funder- burke said that he wasn‘t sure if they had won the recognition again or if he was just looking at the same information from last year. “But then we received the letter from U.S. News & World Report,” he said. “Given how hard our teachers and administration work, I’m tick- led that they get the recognition they deserve.” KMHS was the only high school in Cleveland County to receive the honor this year and was one of only 41 institutions across the state to be listed as either gold, silver, bronze or honorable mention. Funderburke credits the extra ef- forts of his staff, the support from the community, and the students who take advantage of the opportu- nities given to them for this honor. - “I think this shows a willingness of (our) teachers to work before and after school, outside of school hours, to help our students learn and succeed,” he said. “But even that wouldn’t be possible if students weren’t willing to stay or the par- ents weren’t wiling to drop them off and pick them up.” “With all of the success KMHS has had over the years, the support we get from the community is un- believable as well,” Funderburke said, adding that the positive sup- port from the community really helps a student or teacher feel proud about where they attend. “That helps and I don’t think that you can measure that.” KMHS has continued to make the list of America’s Best High Schools since “U.S. News & World Report” began ranking the schools a year ago.
