Yet, almost every week I am reminded that what we preachers proclaim is not our message and that both the ability and the op- portunity to proclaim are gifts from the Holy Spirit. Further- more, it is'wonderful to discover the many times when God works through our efforts, even if we feel that we have failed. There is a fascinating story about the famous missionary: Robert Moffat, who had returned to Scotland to recruit helpers to the mission field after several years of faithful service in South Africa. When he, arrived at the church where he was scheduled to speak one cold, wintry night, Moffat was dismayed to discover that only a small group had come out to hear him. But what both- ered him even more was that the only people in attendance were women, ‘and although he was grateful for their interest he had specifically hoped to challenge some men. : The text that Moffat had cho- sen as the basis for his remarks that evening was, “Unto you, O men I call” from Proverbs 8:4. Yet, he was so focused on the lack of grown men in the sanctuary that night that he hardly noticed « that there was a young boy pres- ent who was pumping the bellows for the organ. Moffat was so frus- trated as he delivered his message ~ that he failed to notice that the young boy was listening intently. When Moffat finished his ser- mon and delivered the call for a spiritual response, nobody came forward because they were all women and the preacher’s call was issued with men in mind. But the young boy was deeply moved by the challenge Moffat had given, and as a result he promised God he would follow in the foot- steps of this missionary preacher from South Africa. When this boy grew up, he chose to go and minister to the To follow is a list of upcoming Churches of the Week. Moffat never ceased to wonder that his appeal, which he thought was intended only for grown men, had been used by God to help stir the heart of a young boy, and it was this young boy that God had chosen to use in a fresh and powerful way. Though the preacher was frus- trated that particular night, God had used him to help a young boy hear and respond to the call of Christ. That boy was never the same again, and neither was Africa after David Livingstone re- sponded to God’s call. * Dr. Jeff Hensley is pastor of ™ Kings Mountain Baptist Church.
