Page 2A Obituaries Frank Gladden SPRINGFIELD, VA. - Charles Frank Gladden, 91, died Feb. 3, 2009. Born and raised in Kings Mountain, where he gradu- ated from the old Central School, he joined the Armed Forces. A veteran of W orld War II, he fought at the Bat- tle of the Bulge earning a Bronze metal for his service to his country. An avid Redskin fan, he loved to sing and dance. He and his wife, June Dean Gladden, would have cele- brated their 57th wedding anniversary Feb. 9. Surviving are his wife of the home; his oldest daugh- ter and namesake, Frankie J. Gladden of Kings Mountain; his daughter, Debbie Maroney and husband Alan of Woodbridge, Va; his sen, Dean Gladden and wife, JoAnne of Ashburn, Va.; his grandchildren Bryon White and wife Susan of Kings Mountain, Mary Anne Wil- son and husband Steve of Gastonia; Brandon White and wife Amanda of Kings Mountain; Richard and Katy Maroney, Drew and Kevin Gladden, all of Woodbridge, Va., and Jacob and Jeremy Gladden of Ashburn, Va.; his angels: great-grandchildren Mary Arista Barrett of Gas- tonia, Colton White of Kings Mountain, Austin White of Dallas, and Logan Renee White of Kings Mountain, all of whom called him ‘Pop.’ Frank loved to play base- ball as a young man on the old Cora Mill ball field and oh how he loved his ‘Pepsi.’ Funeral rites with full military honors were held Feb. 5, 2009 in Springfield. He will be missed by his family but now he is safe in the arms ‘of our dear Lord Jesus Christ. Frankie would like to thank her many friends and loved ones who helped and prayed for her and her fam- ily during their time of grief. Jean Pahl KINGS MOUNTAIN - Jean Ellen Pahl, 79, of White Oak Manor, mother of Jean Ellen Jones and granddaugh- ter of Jennifer Jones Chan- dler, both of Kings Mountain, died Feb. 7, 2009 at Kings Mountain Hospital. The funeral was held" Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Ollie Harris Me- morial Chapel, following in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Widow of Warren W. Pahl of Sevierville, Tn., she retired at age 57 from Gen- eral Motors in Lockport, NY after 25 years and traveled with her husband to every state in the US via R V. Cooking was the way she told you she loved you. Two step-sons also survive. Johnny Smith KINGS MOUNTAIN - Everette Harvey “Johnny” Smith, 70, of 1300 North- woods Dr., died Feb. 10, 2009 at home. He was retired after 26 years with Lithium Corpora- tion of America, a veteran of US Army service, a taxider- mist who loved hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Shirley Ogle Smith; three ‘sons, one brother, one sister, five grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. The memorial service was held Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009 at 4 p.m. at Ollie Har- ris Memorial Chapel. Police Reports interment . The Kings Mountain Herald Four arrested in robbery attempt | Don Hopper Jr. lice. Clifton Gordon Four young people were arrested after an attempted robbery of the Food Lion Store, 1523 S. Lafayette Street, in Shelby Feb. 11. : Shelby Police said that two store employees encountered the suspects just outside the store but were able to run back inside and lock the door to the business where they called po- Shelby Police officers located the suspect vehicle on E. Dixon Boule- vard. Detectives continued the in- vestigation which resulted in four being charged in the incident. A 9mm handgun with altered serial numbers was also recovered from the vehicle. Wednesday, February 18, 2009, Clifton Lemarr Gordon, 19, of Shelby, was charged with attempted robbery with a dan- gerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, altering the serial numbers on a firearm and failure to comply. He was placed in the Cleveland County Law Enforcement Center under a $100,431.00 secured bond. 837 Logan St., Brian Lavonte Byrd, 19, of 9915 Wild Dogwood Court, Charlotte, Derik Martin Jordan, 18, of 1515 Phifer Road, Kings Mountain, and Don Diego Hopper Jr., Kester Dr., 16, of 141 Cherryville, were each charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and held under $50,000 secured bonds. Derik Jordan ; Arrests made in convenience store robbery Shane Alan Kelly, 33, and'Charity Leanne McGin- nis, 27, both of 225 N. City Street were arrested by Kings Mountain Police Thursday, Feb. 12,and charged with armed robbery of One Stop Convenience Store 125, 2120 Shelby Rd., Kings Mountain, and con- spiracy to commit armed robbery. McGinnis was also charged with five counts of child abuse after officers found five children, ages toddler through 10 and under, left unattended in her home. Shane was jailed under $15,000 secured bond. McGinnis was jailed under $20,000 secured bond. According to a press re- lease issued by KMPD Det. Cpl. J. T. McDougal, Police responded to an armed rob- bery at One Stop Store, 2120 Shelby Road, and was in- formed that a white male came into the store and de- manded money from the register clerk while appear- ing to brandish a weapon under his shirt. The clerk complied with his request and the suspect|exited the store and got into a red or burgundy colored vehicle possibly driven by a white female traveling west on Highway 74 Business. While conducting an in- vestigation McDougal said that KM Officers were in- formed by Gastonia Police Department that they just had an armed robbery about 3 a.m. Thursday in their ju- risdiction that matched the suspect vehicle description given at the One Stop rob- bery. Gastonia Officers were able to obtain the license plate number from from the Gastonia robbery and Kings Mountain officers followed up on the information. Offi- cers learned that the vehicle belonged to a subject that was not involved in the rob- beries and information led officers to 225 N. City Street in Kings Mountain where officers from the N. C. High- way Patrol, Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office and Kings Mountain Police con- ducted a surveillance of the residence where sometime later the suspect vehicle drove up in the roadway and subjects were taken into cus- tody. | In the Gastonia case,Kelly and McGinnis were charged with conspir- acy to commit armed rob- bery with a dangerous weapon and common law robbery, according to the magistrate’s office. Couple appear in court on murder charges The Cleveland County couple accused of murdering 2- year-old Jeremiah Swafford made their first court appear- ance Monday and remain in the Cleveland County. Detention Center without bond. Cleveland County Sheriff’s officers arrested Dwight Stacy Justice, 42, and Kathy Lynn Swafford, 20, of 867-30 E. Zion Church Road in Shelby and charged them both each with one count of felony child abuse end one count of felony murder. The child was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte Feb. 13 with injuries to the head and body. At 3:18 p.m. on Feb. 14, 2009 he died. The child has a great-grandmother and other relatives in Grover. Job workshop to be held Feb. 23 Cleveland Community College is continuing its “How to Get a Job” workshop on Monday, Feb. 23 from 1-4 p.m. in room 1138 of the Student Activities Center on campus. The workshops will be facilitated by Holly Sweat, direc- tor of Workforce and Development at CCC, and will cover resume writing, interviewing skills, filling out a job applica- tion, finding your next job and dressing for success. City St., armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery, both felonies, driving while li- cense revoked, $20,000 bond, secured. FEB. 12: Christopher Dalton Hall, 18, 700 Marion St., first degree burglary, breaking into a motor vehi- cle, attempted larceny motor vehicle, all felonies, felony larceny, felony possession stolen goods and consuming underage of 21, $50,000 bond, secured.
