Page 6A The Kings Mountain Herald Wednesday, April 1, 2009 Where everybody knows your name There was a comedy on television several years ago that was called "Cheers," and the action in this pro- gram took place in a bar after which the show was named. The show began with a theme song that opened with the words: "Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name." The song fit the content of the show because the characters apparently con- sidered "Cheers" a place where they could be them- selves and unload their problems in an atmosphere of mutual acceptance. A popular Christian au- thor once wrote about a marine buddy of his whe had become a new Chris- tian. When he saw his friend later, he asked him how he was getting along in ‘his new church. He replied that everything was going okay but that there was something missing, and he went on to explain himself in this way: "The only thing I miss is that old fellowship all the guys in our outfit used to have down at the slop shoot - we'd sit around, laugh, tell stories, drink a few beers, and really let our hair hang down. It great!" I'm afraid that many people feel this way about the church, because they never really experience the sort of community that the church is sup- posed to offer. Sometimes this is their own fault, for they put up barri- ers that keep them- selves from really getting too close to others. But at other times the fault lies with those who con- sider themselves faithful was Meditation Dr. Jeff Hensley Pastor Kings Mountain Baptist Church Christians, and there are certainly a number of rea- sons why such things happen, but I think one of them is that we have trouble fol- lowing the bibli- cal admonition that we should - as Paul says in Galatians 6:2 - "carry each other's burdens." The context in which Paul offered this ad- vice has to do with how we respond to a brother or sis- ter who is, "caught in a panion and restore him or her into the fellowship. Paul also says that we should do this work "gen- tly," which means that we should do it with a spirit of "meekness." In other words, because we are all sinners we realize that each of us sometimes makes a mistake and all of us occa- sionally need to find "a place where: everybody knows our name," and what better place can there be than in a church, which is basically a fellowship of sinners who have been saved by the grace of God? sin." This is one of the most prominent spiritual chal- lenges that we encounter in a church, I suspect, for even though we may be saved sinners, we are still sinners and we sometimes make mistakes. What do we do when this happens? The apostle Paul says that we should "restore him (or her) gently." Now the word "restore" is a transla- tion of a Greek word that has do to with setting a fractured bone, which means that when a brother or sister makes a mistake we are to seek out ways to help reset our fallen com- Mark Beach Properties 306 W.
