Luke Sappenfield 6-2, The Kings Mountain Herald Patriots bounce back, beat Burns By GARY STEWART Sports Editor What a difference two days make. After losing to Burns 15-5 Monday at Lancaster Field #2, Kings Mountain Middle de- feated Burns 6-5 Thursday. The difference was that the Patriots finally played an error free game. “I have been preach- ing to the guys that we have to limit our mistakes in order to win, and they responded,” said Coach Monty Deaton. Will Sellers led off the game with a single, stole second and scored on a double by Alex Grooms. Grooms scored on a two-out hit by Timmy Baucom. Burns battled back in the bot- tom of the first to tie the game at 2-all. KM regained the lead in the third on a hit by John Day, a walk to Landon Bolin and Bau- com’s second hit of the day. Day started on the mound and pitched two good innings. He gave up back-to-back walks to start the third and Sellers came on to get a force out and strike out two batters to end the inning. “That was big for us to get out of the inning without giving up a run,” Deaton said Burns tied the game again in the fourth. Day reached on an error in - the fifth and stole second. He scored on a double by Grooms. An out later, Bolin and Baucom executed a hit and run to score Bolin for a 5-3 lead. Leading 5-4 going in the sev- enth, Day led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Grooms for a 6-4 lead. Burns made it interested by getting a leadoff triple and cutting the Barnes Auditorium. Keys to the game were Sellers pitching - he did a great job of locating his pitches - and Baucom at the plate and John Day leading off three innings by reaching base.” Baucom finished with 3-for- 4 and three RBIs to lead the plate attack. Grooms and Day had two hits each and Bolin, Sellers and Colby Bailey had one each. Day gave up three hits over two innings and Sellers gave up five hits and no walks over the last five innings. In Monday’s game, only one of the Burns runs was earned as KM committed nine errors. Sellers pitched 4 1/3 innings for KM. He gave up two hits and struck out four. Bolin pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up six hits and struck out three. KM took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first but Burns came back to tie the game in the second and scored four in the third to take the lead. “Bottom line is if we had made the plays in the field we win the game,” said KM Coach Monty Deaton. “You cannot give a team five to six outs an in- ning and expect them not to score.” Grooms led the KM attack with 3-for-3. Bolin had two hits and Sellers, Baucom and Day had one each. Kings Mountain is off this week for spring break. The Pa- triots play Lincolnton next Mon- day and North Lincoln on Thursday.
