Open Gate Garden Club focuses on roses By DOT HAM : Garden Club Reporter Eleven members of the Open Gate Garden Club and two visitors met April 8, 2009 at Boyce Memorial ARP Church with Linda Talon as hostess. She served a delicious salad course. Margie Bridges, who presided in the absence of Betty Grant, welcomed the group and the Club Collect was read in unison. She ex- plained that these are beauti- ful roses that bloom all summer long and need very little care. Some fertilizer is needed and mulch can be added around the plants if planted in the yard. They can be purchased in different sizes. The roses are ngach * easier to care for than regular TOSEs. Melba Boyles announced that arrangements have been completed for a trip to Hatcher Gardens and Wood- land Preserve in Spartanburg, SC for the, May 13 meeting. The group departs from the parking lot at Boyce Memo- rial Church. Betty Alexander, who suggested that members plant flowers that come back from seed for easy spring and sum- mer color, gave timely tips. Violas, larkspurs, poppies and coneflowers seed them- selves into the gravel and oil and pop up every spring. To reduce watering, grow plants that need little water and use rain barrels to collect water. Alexander stated that good hoses are required. Spend a little extra money up front so you will not spend your days untangling. a kinked hose.
