Page 2B The Kings Mountain Herald Wednesday, July 15, 2009 Coaching changes at KMHS By GARY. STEWART Sports Editor Several coaching changes have been announced at Kings Moun- tain High School for the 2009-10 school year. The most notable change is in women’s soccer, where veteran head coach Dan Potter has retired from coaching and East Elemen- tary teacher Lauren Sochacki has been hired as his replacement. Potter built both the men’s and women’s programs from the ground up. His teams produced nu- merous conference championships. His 2009 team won the Southwest- ern Conference for four straight years and advanced all the way to the 2009 state championship game. Sochacki played high school and elite soccer in New Jersey and earned a full scholarship to Gard- ing injury. ner-Webb University. She played for the Lady Bulldogs for two years before suffering a groerend. She will be assisted by one of Potter’s assistants, David Bum- gardner, and newcomer Eli Wort- man. Wortman will also be head cross country coach. Wortman graduated from Crest High School, where he played soc- cer. He has been teaching in the Raleigh area and will come to KMHS to teach math. KMHS women’s volleyball coach Brian Grant will take over as head coach of the JV women’s soc- cer team. Grant has playing and coaching experience in soccer, having played high school soccer in his native New York. He played intramural soccer in college as his college did not offer competitive soccer. He previously coached the JV men’s team and KMHS. Grayson Pierce is transferring to a history teaching position at KMHS after teaching at Crest last year. He will serve as head coach of the JV men’s basketball and var- sity men’s tennis teams. Pierce assisted John Wall with the Crest varsity men’s basketball team last year. He is a Crest gradu- ate and played basketball at Lees- McRae. Potter Continued from Page 1B “I never thought this day would come,” Potter said. “I loved playing soccer and I loved coaching soccer. I really loved helping my kids love the game as much as I did, and all of them played at a pretty high level. I cherish that, now more than ever.” Potter said he would now be a “Lone Stranger” as far as sports is concerned. Be- cause of his love for - and involvement in - soccer since eighth grade, he never played an- other sport. “I will continue to teach,” he said, “and, who knows, this may not be forever. It may just be a break but at this time it was the thing to do. I know I'm going to have the best gar- den in town.” Potter said he appreciated all of the sup- port of his players, the administration and the athletic department at KMHS. “I was thinking the other day about all the different principal I have worked under, and they were all so supportive,” he said. “The current athletic department has been most supportive. Kevin Cruise (Assistant AD) went out of his way to get our stadium ready to play after that big rain left it standing in water, and Suzanne Grayson has been golden. “I thank them and the players. Without players you don’t have anything. It was a lot of joy.” Potter said he will continue his summer soccer camps in Kings Mountain and Shelby, and he won’t be a stranger to John Gamble Stadium on game nights. “I won’t be out there every day at prac- tice,” he said, “but it sure will be fun watch- ing them play.” End of year Bethware awards Kindergarten — Reading — Shaylynn Sharpe, Randy Lyles, Brandon Bullock, Brandon Williams, and Jordan Stacks; Math — Ryne Smith, Nick Bur- rows, Seth Henson, Dustin Put- nam, and Joshua Anderson; Writing — Marcus Odums, Kennedy Barnes, Austin Brown, Riddick Phonephet, and Andrew Mannino; Improvement — Or- lando Odums, Blake Davis, Danielle Dedonming, Jon Ham- rick, Lucy Cao, Daniel Thomas, Josh Giles, Nick Gibbs, Michael Meeler, and Tessa Hamrick; Character Education Students of the Year — Jordan Parker, Olivia Green, Isaiah Gregory, Tucker Leatherman, Grace Clark, Adam Metts, Gricelda Mayo, Cam Vongphakdy, Ashlynn Marr, and Nickolas Wright.
