Middle School eyeing
good football year
Kings Mountain Middle School’s foot-
ball team is eyeing another good year in the
Tri-County Conference.
Veteran coach Monty Deaton and his
staff welcomed 70 players on the first day
of practice. They are now down to 55 and
have begun live contact drills. The team is
steadily improving each practice and
coaches are moving guys around to find
their strengths.
“We have several players returning off
last year’s team that lost to Shelby in the
championship game,” Deaton said. “We
have been working hard of the offensive
side of the ball the past two weeks and will
_ put in the defense this week.”
Returning players on offense include
quarterback Alex Reynolds, running backs
Dashon Guest and Jacob Miller, and line-_
men Mason Fleisher, Nick Postell, Travis
Oates, Austin Loman, Douglas Edgerton
and Chaz Gamble.
Newcomers showing progress are Jor-
dan Ford at running back, Landon Bolin
and Derek Gann at tight end, Elijah
Whitaker and Shawn Adams at wing/slot,
and Xavier Johnson and Ezekial Grant at
wide receiver.
Deaton said the Patriots will run a com-
bination of two tight end set with some
spread mixed in. Defensively, they will run
the KM forty which proved highly success-
ful at KMHS under Coach Denny Hicks,
with some variations in short yardage situ-
ations.
“We are looking forward to another
great season and the kids are working hard
to get better,” Deaton said. “Even though
we are much smaller up front this year the
guys are a lot quicker and aggressive. With
Dashon, Jacob and Jordan in the backfield
and these guys opening up holes and get-
ting after it we should have a good year.
“Our first game (Wednesday, Sept. 9) is
a re-match of last year’s championship at
Shelby, hopefully with a different result.”
After that game, the Patriots will play
three home games in a row against Lincol-
nton, West Lincoln and Crest and close the
regular season with road games at East Lin-
coln, North Lincoln and Burns. The league
championship game will be played on No-
vember 4.
