A Wednesday, September 9, 2009 GARY STEWART/HERALD The Kings Mountain Herald West Elementary awards Rahheim Moore, fourth grade student at East Elementary, was recognized by the Kings Mountain Booster Club as an outstanding student at halftime of Friday’s Mountaineer game with Kennedy Charter at Gamble Stadium. Back, left to right; are Raheeim’s mother, Felicia Sanders, Principal Jennifer Wampler, and Booster Club President Terry McClain. 2009 Step-One Challenge walking winners named The 2009 winners of the county-wide Step One Challenge walking contest were honored at a Cleveland County Commis- sioner’s meeting held in the Commis- sioner’s Chambers on September 1, 2009. First place team was the “PPG Amazing Walking Machines” composed of Marie Harrill, Brice Putnam, Ida Yelton, David Yelton, Susan Schmid, and Cheryl Farfour. This team walked a total of 8,183,193 steps over the six-week long contest, an average of 1,363,866 steps per person. For their efforts, the team was awarded a team meal at Gondola’s Italian Restaurant, top-of-the-line pedometers, individual tro- phies, and their names will be placed on the winning trophy that remains on display throughout the year at the Cleveland County Administration Building. Second place went to “Shelby Middle School Pure Dominators” composed of Tommy Wease, Pattie Hunt, Jimmy Pate, Matt Bridges, Ashley Tucker, and David Pless. This team walked a total of 7,583,329 steps averaging 1,263,889 steps per person. The second place team also won individual trophies, top-of-the-line pedometers, and Subway gift cards. The City of Shelby’s “Lilly Nanny’s” was the third place team winner. This team, composed of Chris Anderson, Marcys Kennedy, Horace Weaver, Clint Goforth, Eugene Philbeck, and Robert Weaver, walked a total of 6,670,768 steps, averag- ing 1,111,795 steps per person. They also received individual trophies, top-of-the-line pedometers, and gift cards. Both PPG, Industries and the City of Shelby have participated in multiple work- site health promotion programs offered through the Cleveland County Health De- partment. Five additional teams within the top twenty teams also represented PPG, In- dustries. This year’s teams walked nearly 230,000,000 steps over the six week con- test. This is equivalent to approximately 114,587 miles, which is long enough to have walked the Nile River 27 times, the circumference of the Earth at the equator four-and-a-half times, and across America at its widest point 33 times.
