" Page 4B The Kings Mountain Herald Wednesday, September 30, 2009 Castellano tops 200 In win over Raiders » By GARY STEWART Sports Editor Alex Castellano topped the 100-yard rushing mark in each of Kings Moun- tain’s first three JV football games, but went one better in Thursday’s 36-28 victory over South Point at John Gamble Stadium. Castellano topped the 200-yard mark, gaining 203 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown; and he also threw a 50-yard halfback pass to Cameron Pittman for a touchdown. The victory gives the Mountaineers a 3-1 record heading into their fourth straight home game Thurs- day at 7 p.m. against Shelby. Last week’s game was close most of the way until Kings Mountain went up 36-20 late in the third quar- ter on a 17-yard touchdown reception by Philip Quinn and a two-point conversion pass from Jonathan Clark to Pittman. South Point came back to cut the margin to 36-28 with 9:44 left in the game on a 16 yard touchdown run by Aaron Biggerstaff. The: Red Raiders drove into KM territory twice after that but fourth down passes fell in- complete. Kings Mountain grabbed a quick 6-0 lead with Castellano rambling 61 yards on the first two plays of the game to set up a two- yard scoring run by Dontar- ius Simmons at the 10:51 mark of the first quarter. South Point drove 67 yards to take a 8-6 lead on a 18-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell Painter to Devan Robbins and a two- point conversion run by Je- remy Sanders. Robbins caught a 40- yard pass down the middle of the field to put the Raiders up 14-6 with 27 seconds left in the quarter. Castellano’s 50-yard half- back pass to Pittman on the first play of the second quarter brought the Moun- taineers to within 14-12. KM defensive lineman Deon Murray slammed Big- gerstaff to the ground on a fourth and four play to give KM possession at its own 36. In what was the most’ dazzling play of the game, Castellano took a pitch from Clark to the right, side-stepped two would-be tacklers. and zig-zagged through the South Point de- fense for a 54 yard run to the Raider 10. Clark hit Simmons on a touchdown pass and two-point conver- sion to put the Moun- taineers up 20-14. After a bizarre ending to the first half with KM com- mitting two straight penal- ties and South Point getting three cracks at a touchdown with no time remaining, the KM defense held the Raiders to 3-and-out on the first series of second half and Jerik Dabbs returned the punt to the Raider 32. After a penalty, Castellano went off tackle for a 37- yard touchdown run and « Clark passed to Simmons for a two-point conversion and a 28-14 led. Robbins caught another touchdown pass over the middle for a 24 yard score as South Point cut the lead to 28-20. A long punt return by Alex Toms, followed by a face mask penalty against South Point, gave KM a first down at the Raider 26 and Clark passed 17 yards to Quinn to put the Moun- taineers up 36-20. Quinn led the Moun- taineers in receiving with three catches for 31 yards. Biggerstaff was a load for the Mountaineer defense to bring down.
