Page 2B Ashbrook shocker over Forestview gives 5 teams shot at first place By GARY STEWART Sports Editor Ashbrook’s 21-0 upset of first place Forestview Friday night has made things very interesting in the Big South 3A Conference. As teams prepare for the final two regular season games, five of them have a shot at first place and six of the seven teams could have the opportunity to go to the state playoffs. As it stands now, North Gas- ton, which has not won a confer- ence game, is destined to finish in last place even if the Wildcats upset South Point in their season finale Friday. With three wins, Ashbrook can become playoff eligible if the Green Wave upsets arch rival . son finale next week. Ashbrook is open this week and will have two weeks to prepare for the Huskies. With Forestview losing to Ash- brook, the Jaguars, South Point and Hunter Huss are tied for first place with 3-1 records and sitting in a good position to move up if one of those teams falter are Crest ‘and Kings Mountain. Mathemati- cally, it is possible for any of those five teams to win or share the con- ference championship. Kings Mountain could make a big move up Friday night when the Mountaineers travel to Crest and on the final night of the regu- lar season (Nov. 6) when Forestview comes to John Gamble . Stadium. Wins in those two games could move the Mountaineers high enough in the standings to ei- ther share the conference crown or The Kings Mountain Herald gain a first round home playoff game. It won’t be easy, but despite its 4-5 overall record Greg Lloyd’s team has been competitive and in position in the fourth quarter to win eight of those nine games. Two of the losses (Hickory and Huss) came in overtime and two others (South Point and Shelby) on fourth quarter scores by the op- position. Friday’s game at Crest will be a big one for Lloyd and the Moun- taineers. Lloyd is a former player at Crest and was the offensive co- . ordinator for two Crest teams that won state championships. Plus, Crest is the only Cleveland County rival the Mountaineers have not beaten during Lloyd’s three years in Kings Mountain. It will be a monumental task. Wednesday, October 28, 2009 The Chargers have exceptional skill players and a quick defense that doesn’t give up yards easily but if the Mountaineers play at the top of their game a win is certainly possible. “The thing that jumps out at you about Crest is how fast they are and how many fast players they have,” Lloyd said. “They can move the ball, they have a good defense and their kicking game is solid. It will be a difficult task, es- pecially up there. They are very tough at home.” The Mountaineers’ defense, which has improved tremendously since earlier in the year, will have to be at the top of its game, the of- fense will have to control the ball and special teams will have to play well. Crest has several quick backs and return men who can go 276 HETEON SE 6 TE the distance from anywhere on the field. : wn The Chargers’ key weapon is senior quarterback turn busted plays into touch- downs. ; “The key for us is to keep building on what we’re doing,” Coach Lloyd said. “We can’t give them a lot of points. Hopefully we. can win the second half and the. game. : “We have to hold onto the ball and eliminate big plays,” he added. “We can’t give them any. run-backs and let their quarter- back loose. : Reggie = Wilkins, who has already commit- ted to UNC.
