Page 4B The Kings Mountain Herald Wednesday, October 28, 2009 JV Mountaineers bite Wildcats 46-12 By GARY STEWART Sports Editor Kings Mountain scored on all six of its first half possessions to defeat North Gaston 46-12 in a JV foot- ball game Thursday after- noon at John Gamble Stadium. + The game, originally scheduled to be played at North Gaston, was moved to KMHS as part of a JV- varsity doubleheader. With heavy rains forecast for Fri- day night - and the fact that two of the last three KMHS homecomings had been held in pouring rains - the schools agreed to. move the varsity game up a day. The JV Mountaineers posted their fifth straight win, and seventh in eight games overall. They host Crest in their final home game Thursday at 7 p.m. and travel to Forestview next Thursday for their final game. Kings Mountain shared the wealth on offense as seven different players scored a touchdown apiece. About the only negative about the KM performance was the failure to convert extra points. The Moun- taineers missed all of their kick attempts but scored two point conversions on a pass to Philip Quinn and a run by Alex Castellano. Castellano again led the rushing attack with 85 yards on 14 carries, including a two-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Jonathan Clark picked up 34 yards on four carries and scored on a one- yard sneak, and also hit 7- of-8 passes for 132 yards and three touchdowns. Cameron Pittman caught two passes for 29 yards and a 17-yard touchdown; Jacob Lineberger caught two passes for 52,yards and a 41-yard touchdown; and Quinn caught a 15-yard touchdown pass. : Dontarius Simmons gained 18 yards on six car- ries. He scored on a three- yard run and also caught a 29-yard pass. Kings Mountain’s final touchdown came on a 75- yard kickoff return by Jer- ick Dabbs in the second - half. Because of ‘the lop- sided score, the clock ran continuously in the second half. The KM defense, led by Jose Sappia, Collins Press- ley, Kavin Swann, Alex Toms, James Story, Garrett Fredrick and Cody Griffith, didn’t allow a first down in the first half. They held the Wildcats to three and out on three possessions, and re- covered fumbles on two, but a breakdown in the kicking game allowed North Gaston to return a kickoff to the 14-yard line, from which point Brandon Anderson scored with 6:08 left in the half to make the score 28-6. Kings Mountain began substituting at the beginning of the second half and lost a fumble at their own 42 to set up North Gaston’s final score on a one-yard run by Corey Staley with 44 sec- onds left in the third period. Dabbs returned the Wild- cats’ kickoff 75 yards to round out the scoring. North Gaston made it to the KM 11 late in the game but a sack by Matthew Shepherd and a pass break-up by Tyrece Crawford ended the threat.
