‘Dr. Robert Blackburn of Boiling Springs, member
of the Cleveland County Board of Health and pres-
ident of the Association of North Carolina Boards
of Health, was recently awarded the National As-
sociation of Local Boards of Health’s Evertt I.
Hageman Award. The accolade is the most pres-
tigious award given to a member who has demon-
strated loutstanding leadership and enthusiasm
for public health.

Kathryn Davis Bennett
and Jason Ellis Burgess
were married on Saturday,
Sept. 12, at First Baptist
Church in Kings Mountain.
The Rev. John W. Futterer
officiated the 4:30 p.m. cer-
emony.
The bride is the daughter
of Mike and Karla Bennett.
She is the granddaughter of
Mrs. Maxine ‘Bennett and
the late Dorus L.Bennett
and Mrs. Patricia Russell,
all of Kings Mountain. A
2003 graduate of Kings
Mountain High School, she
earned her Bachelor of Sci-
‘ence degree in Business
from Appalachian State
University in 2007. While
at ASU, she was a member
of the women’s soccer team
and a member of the Hospi-
tality and Tourism Manage-
ment Club. She also served
as an assistant soccer coach
for the girl’s soccer team at
Watauga High School. She
is presently employed by
Enterprise in Shelby.
The bridegroom is the
son of Darrell Burgess and
Barbara Crouse of Denver,
He is the grandson of Mrs.
Gladys Houck and the late
Bobby Monroe Houck. Pa-
ternal grandparents are the
late Mr. and Mrs. James
Lester Burgess, all of Den-
ver. A 2002 graduate of East
Lincoln High School, he
earned a Bachelor of Sci-
ence degree in Business
from Belmont Abbey Col-
lege in 2006. While at Bel-
mont Abbey, he was a
member of the men’s bas-
ketball team and a member
and President of Phi Kappa
Theta Fraternity. He is
presently employed as Pur-
chasing Manager of Colo-
nial Materials in Charlotte

hosted the rehearsal dinner
at Big E’s in Kings Moun-
tain where guests enjoyed
barbecue chicken or steak
with all the trimmings.
The couple honey-
mooned at Ocho Rios Re-
sort in Jamaica. They are
now "at home in Kings
Mountain.
Stem cell donor
drive Nov. 4th
Friends of 38-year-old
Kevin Randall, who is battling
leukemia, will be hosting a
donor drive for Randall on his
birthday, Nov. 4th, from 11
am.-7:30 p.m. at Kings
Mountain Baptist Church.
Doctors have told the Randalls
that a stem cell transplant
could lead to full remission in
his case, but they need to find
a match. At the drive, a simple
swab of the inside of a donor’s
cheek will be taken and sent
for testing. Donors will be
placed on a registry and will
have the opportunity to save
other lives. The drive is free
and open to the public. Cake
will be served in honor of
Randall’s birthday. For more
