Bill Cochran KINGS MOUNTAIN — William C. “Bill” Cochran, 75, of 605 Temple St., died Friday, Now. 13, 2009 at Ric iensg home. Born 1 n Ruther- fiotr d County, NC, he was the son of the late William C. and Mary Effie Haulk Cochran. An avid golfer and member of the Cleveland County Senior Citizens Golf Association, he had re- tired after 21 years from Firestone Industries in Gas- tonia. A US Navy veteran dur- ing the Korean War, he served on the battleship USS Murray. He was a lov- ing husband, father and grandfather. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Martha “Sue” Foster, Cochran of the home; sons, William Keith Cochran and wife Joe Ann Lawson Cochran of John- son City, TN, and Robert L. "Cochran of Columbus, NC; daughter, Connie J. Dean and husband Ricky of Oak Ridge, TN; sisters, Hazel Biddy of Caroleen and Marie Crosby of Hinesville, GA; and five grandchildren. He was a lov- ing husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family very much. A native of Wood- burn, IN, she was the daughter of the late Glen M. and Helen Poisel Chaney. She was married to Daniel B. Platt of Kings Mountain. Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 14 at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel with interment at Mountain Rest Cemetery. Dr. Martha Plonk KINGS MOUNTAIN - Dr. Martha A. Plonk, 90, a resident of Summit Place of Kings Mountain, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009 at Summit Place. Born in Cleveland County, daughter of the late Rufus L. and Kathleen McGill Plonk, she was also preceded in death by a brother, William Lawrence Plonk and a sister, Nancy Plonk Sutton. A member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, she was a former member of the Kings . Mountain Woman’s Club and Delta Kappa Gamma. She graduated from the University of North Car- olina at Greensboro, re- ceived her Masters degree from Ohio State University and her Doctorate from Michigan State University. She was a Lieutenant Com- mander in the US Naval Re- serves and served in the Waves during World War II. She was professor at the University of West Vitginia for three years and retired after 30 years as a professor at Oregon State University. Surviving are her sisters, Rachel Plonk Gladden and husband Timothy of Kings Mountain, and Virginia Plonk Morris of Signal Mountain, TN, and a num- ber of nieces and nephews. The ‘memorial service was conducted + Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009 at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. Rev. Bill Jeffcoat and Rev. Ronnie Church of- ficiated.
