The murders put a lot of people on edge and led to a lot of phone call tips to several law enforcement agencies. Officers from the Cleveland County Sheriff's Depart- ment, Grover Police Department and State Highway Patrol aided South Carolina law enforcement in patrolling the bor- . der and setting up road blocks to find the suspect plastered on wanted posters throughout the region. The suspect identified as Patrick Tracy Burris, 41, was . shot and killed in a gun fight with police officers at a resi- i dence in Dallas, NC. Swine flu becomes a pandemic The HIN1 (swine) flu virus broke out earlier this year in Mexico and quickly spread to the United States. It became a pan- demic, affecting people on nearly every continent. And Cleveland County was not immune. Rumors of children attending school with the virus started spreading through the county almost faster than the illness itself. Although some cases of children with flu-like symptoms were reported, it was not made aware to the . media whether those children were suffering from HIN1 . or the regular seasonal flu. Letters were sent home to par- . ents from Cleveland County Schools asking for their help in the prevention of the spread of swine flu. As the virus continued to garner headlines in local and national media outlets, others grew worried. Roger Goins, owner of Roger's Barbecue in Kings Mountain, saw a decline in customers and reminded the public that swine flu could not be spread through pork. Vaccinations were created and have been given to school employees and many children over the past few months. As the inoculations continue, the rates of those in- fected have seemed to decrease. ‘CONTRIBUTED PHOTO This old photograph submitted to The Herald shows workers of the Cora Mill.
