We usually do better
with others when we
are simply ourselves
Have you ever tried so hard to
prevent something that you ended up
causing it? I think we all do that
once in a while. Let me give you an
example.
The wife of Ambassador Dwight
Morrow once gave a high tea for
which there were to be a number of
prominent guests. One of these
guests was financier J. P. Morgan.
For many who knew him, Morgan's
appearance was distinguished by the
prominence of his nose, and fearing
that her little girls might draw undue
attention to Morgan’s conspicuous
nose, Mrs. Morrow prepared them
for how they should behave once
they were introduced to the guests.
Now the Morrows youngest
daughter Anne was outspoken, so
Mrs. Morrow was careful to explain
to her that personal observations
were impolite and that she was not to
make any comments regarding Mr.
Morgan’s nose, no matter what she
thought of it. When the moment
came for the children to be brought
in and introduced, Mrs. Morrow held
her breath as
she saw her
daughter’s eyes
fixed upon Mr.
Morgan’s nose.
Nevertheless,

then they were
on their way
without any
word about the

With a sigh of relief, Mrs. Mor-
row then returned to her duties as
hostess and when she came to her
chief guest, she said, “And now, Mr.
Morgan, will you have cream or
lemon in your nose?” Unfortunately,
the mistakes we most try to avoid
sometimes turn out to be the mis-
takes that we, ourselves, actually
bring to pass.
I have found that I tend to make
more mistakes of this kind whenever
I allow myself to worry too much
about how others perceive me. Now
nobody wants to look bad or have
others speak condescendingly of

there are certain people that all of us
want to impress more than others,
and when we are trying too hard to
impress someone else we tend to
give in to the temptation to pad our
résumé or-augment ourselves in any
way that we can.

Yet, the fact is. that most people
can see right through the facade that
we try to wear and we usually do bet-
ter with others when we are simply
ourselves. My grandmother used to
talk about how much she appreciated
it when people were “just plain
folks.” This was her way of saying «
that she respected integrity; that she
trusted people more when they did

Relay for Life Benefit Saturday
Dixon Presbyterian Church, 602 Dixon School Rd., will
serve breakfast biscuits from 6:30 a.m.-9’a.m. and ham-
burgers and hotdogs from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday in the
Fellowship hall, (Dixon Schoolhouse) for benefit of Relay
for Life. Baked goods will also be available. The public is
invited.
Church yard sale Saturday
Westover Baptist Church, 114 Westover Dr., will hold a
yard sale Saturday from 6 a.m.-12 noon featuring all kinds
of yard sale items, sausage biscuits and donuts. Proceeds

Missionary Speaker Sunday
Moses Neuman of World Care Ministries will speak on
his missionary work during the 11 a.m. worship service
