First of all, no one can
vote in any election unless
the individual becomes a
registered voter by the .
25th-day deadline prior to
any election. For the 2010
Primary Elections, that date
is April 9. All voter regis-

by 5 p.m. that day or be
post-marked by that date.
Seventeen-year-olds may register to vote and vote in the
2010 Primary Elections if they will be 18 years of age by
Nov. 2nd - the date of the General Election.
The deadline for registering to vote for the first time in
Cleveland County is 25-days prior to any election, but it is
also the deadline for any address changes, any name changes
ence. If these changes do not occur by the deadline date,
there will be delays at the polling place in order to correct
this information before a voter is allowed to vote.
Another change affected by the registration deadline is a
political affiliation change. There are four ways that a voter
may be registered to vote: Democrat, Republican, Libertar-
ian or unaffiliated. Many people ask about the registration
possibility of Independent. This political affiliation is not
recognized in North Carolina.
North Carolina’s Primary Elections are considered
“CLOSED”. That means that whatever political affiliation a
nized political parties in North Carolina to help determine
which of their candidates will be going against the other po-
litical party’s candidates for offices which will be on the
General Election ballot. Every voter receives the same ballot
the first Primary and chose a political party in which to vote,
must vote in the same party in the second Primary. However,
if an unaffiliated voter did not vote in the first Primary Elec-
tion, this voter may choose a political party’s primary in
which to vote.
