ST Page 8A ‘The Kings Mountain Herald Wednesday, April 7, 2010 Local educator receives international acclaim Connie Phifer Savell, a member of Beta Epsilon chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society Inter- national, has been selected to at- tend the 2010 Leadership/Management Seminar at the McCombs School of Busi- ness, University of Texas, Austin, June 27-July 9, 2010. International president, Dr. Car- olyn Rants, Iowa, cites that “This intense educational training is taught by world-renown experts in the field of management and in- cludes course work in interpersonal communication, leading across generations, conflict resolution, ef- fective decision-making, advocacy, negotiation skills, grant writing and fundraising, thinking on your feet, and wellness. This training is val- ued in excess of $6,000.” Golden Gift Fund committee chair, Alice Carrier of Vermont, praised the selected participants saying, “The diversity of the group will provide extraordinary net- working and learning opportuni- ties. “Every level of education is rep- resented, including a library spe- cialist and speech pathologist. As these talented and skilled women use their new-found skills and abil- ities, they will enrich both their profession and their communities.” Over the past 30 years, the So- ciety has selected and financed the leadership training of over 600 of the 107,000 members living in 17 countries. Established in 1929, the society defines its mission as promoting professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. : This organization of key women educators provides numerous ben- efits, including scholarships, world fellowships to women who are not members, grants and stipends for research and special projects, pre- sentations at professional meetings, opportunities to write for a ju- ried/peer reviewed publication, participation in community service projects that benefit education and making a difference in the lives of women, children and youth. Connie Phifer Savell was se- lected for this honor for her work’ in the society, abilities as a profes- sional educator, and involvement in her community. Connie is currently serving the Society as Secretary on the state level. Connie said, “This opportunity to meet and study with leaders from other areas of the world will provide me a new avenue for my + personal and professional develop-- ment. I will study with women ed- ucators from Finland, Iceland and 20 states as I improve my leader- ship skills.” The honor organization of key women educators was formed in Austin, Texas on May 11, 1929, by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton from a nu- cleus of 12 founders representing all levels of education, kinder- garten through university. _ Professor of rural education at the University of Texas, Dr. Blan- ton was elected president of the Texas State Teachers” Association in 1916, the first woman to hold that office. Blanton was also the first woman to serve Texas as State Su- perintendent of Public Instruction, having been elected in 1918. More than 2,000 members are expected to attend the International Conven- tion in Spokane, Washington, July 20-24, 2010. Y to host Healthy Kids Day As part of a nationwide effort to encourage kids to get mov- ing, the Dover Foundation YMCA and the Cleveland County Asthma Coalition will host YMCA Healthy Kids Day & Asthma Expo, the nation’s largest health day for kids and families, on April 17 from 10 am.-1 p.m. YMCA Healthy Kids Day & Asthma Expo is filled with fun, engaging and creative activities that foster healthy living, and is a part of the YMCA’s efforts to help kids and families become physically active. The event is co- sponsored by Burns, Crest, Kings Mountain and Shelby high schools. Approximately 2,000 juniors and seniors from the area high schools will be on the CCC campus to explore ca- reer options. Each student is pre-registered for three sessions. Each 40- minute session will be a workshop conducted by an expert in the field. Students have nearly 50 careers to choose from in- cluding business management, education, journalism, music, real estate and trucking.
