THLE RR ARN Wednesday, May 19, 2010 The Kings Mountain Herald ‘Maw’ Foster - a special woman who passed our way By ELIZABETH STEWART staff writer Novella Short Foster, 101 at her death May 14, 2010, was probably Kings Mountain's oldest citizen. Her pleasant de- meanor and her busy life belied her years. "Maw Foster," as everyone called her, said at her 100th birthday in November 2008 that she took no medicine, shopped every Wednes- day, ate out on Thursday at Alston Bridges BBQ in® Shelby, and was always in her pew at Family Wor- ship Church , of God where she was a charter member. Every year for a cen- tury "Maw" celebrated her birthday with family on Thanksgiving Day. She doted on her seven children, 27 grandchil- dren, 55 great-grandchil- dren, 13 great-great grandchildren, and one great-great-great grand- child. "God gave me all these years to be with my fam- ily," said Mrs. Foster, who was married to "Pop" Foster for 64 years before his death. By all accounts she was an inspiration and a role model. She read her Bible every day, testified that she was ready for heaven and younger folk recalled that "Maw" could on occasion shout in church. Novella Short met William F. "Pop" Foster at age 19 at a cornshuck- ing and they were married in 1929. He worked at a sawmill and she became a full © time homemaker. Times were hard in the early years but she said she counted on God and prayer and love always survives. "Maw" Foster never took her blessings for granted and perhap$ that is how her Kings Moun- tain friends will remem- ber her, a special woman who passed our way.
