County Potato Project in need of plow
With harvest time fast ap-
proaching, members of the
Cleveland County Potato
Project are in need of a po-
tato plow.
Steering committee
~ members Bill Horn and
Doug Sharp said that they
will soon start harvesting the
© Irish (white) potatoes they
' planted a couple of months
' ago. But we "need a plow
* that will dig potatoes out of
the ground to be picked up
by volunteers," they added,
in an email.
The group, and its mis-
sion to feed the hungry in
local communities with
white and sweet potatoes, re-
cently received another
grant. PPG, after a request
from one of its employees,
Bill Cullum, awarded the
mittee traveled to Hickory to
receive a check for $2,000
from the Charlotte Diocesan
Advisory Committee for the
Catholic Campaign for
Human Development.
Since the project began,
8,000 Ibs. of white potatoes
have been planted on over
eight acres of land in 11 dif-
ferent plots around the
county. Volunteers with the
project plan to start harvest-
ing the white potatoes as
early as next month.
In, May, Sharp told The
Herald that they planned to
plant a little over an acre of
sweet potatoes, total.
One acre of harvestable
land can produce up to 400-
500 bushels of sweet pota-
toes, according to Lloyd
Lewis, who runs Lewis
»IMr. Jack Charles Forbes and
project $1,000.

More sweet potato plant-
ings may be coming up. In
addition to planting and har-
vesting, maintenance on the
potato patches may also be
needed. To volunteer, call
Doug Sharp at 704-480-
1608 or Bill Horn at 704-
482-5531.
After all of the planting
has been completed, Sharp
said that they plan to put to-
gether a cookbook to share
some of the many recipes
that call for potatoes.
After harvest, potatoes
will be delivered to charita-
ble organizations like the
Kings Mountain Crisis Min-
istry, the Salvation Army,
and the Greater Cleveland
County Baptist Association
. for distribution to those in
need. Many volunteers of
different denominations and:
backgrounds have given
time, support and land to the
cause. . !
