Odus D. Smith, Jr. KINGS MOUNTAIN- Odus D. Smith, Jr., 86, 0f 316 Maner Rd., went to. be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at Kings Mountain Hospice House. Born in Troy, NC, the son of Emma Elizabeth Smith, he . was also preceded in death by two brothers, Rote. T. Smith and Kermit L. Smith and one sister, Helen I. Smith. He came to Kings Moun- tain in 1955 where he opened the Western Auto Store on Main Street. He later moved his business to a building he had built on Cherokee Street where he and his wife worked side by side for 42 years. An active member of First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, he never missed a Sunday. He also enjoyed being part of the Golden Fel- lowship where he enjoyed singing and worshipping with his many friends. He was active in numerous civic clubs in and around Kings Mountain, including the Chamber of Commerce, Kings Mountain Rescue Squad of which he was a life- time board member, Kings Mountain Zoning Board President of Kings Mountain Motor Inns, Inc., President of Colonial Woods Development. He served on the Kings Mountain Natato- rium Committee, and on nu- ‘merous Myrtle Beach HOA boards, was president and owner of Odus D. Smith, Jr. Inc, dba, Western Auto, AAA Sports, Mobile Vibrations and Page Plus Communica- tions; served on the Shelby Investment Club and was one of the owners and members of - the Commodore Yacht Club. He served as chairman of the board of directors of BB&T and was a member of the Kings Mountain Lions Club for over 50 years: He was a veteran of the US Army serving in the European The- atre of Operations during World War II. X QOdus and his wife, Jo Ann, enjoyed traveling to numer- ous countries but always found that Kings Mountain was the place they would al- ways call home. Harris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. ~ Joarris Jfuneral Home Ruth Kimbrell Morganton - Ruth Hoyle Kimbrell, 76, of Poteat Rd., Morganton, NC died Thurs- day, July 15;2010 at Grace Hospital following a period of declining health. Born in Rutherford Co., NC on De- cember 16, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Belo A. Hoyle and Lillie Florence " Ross Hoyle. She worked in the dietary department of Western Carolina Center for twenty-five years. Ruth was devoted to her children, grandchildren, and her church, Burkemont Baptist Church. Ruth is: survived by her son, Philip Kimbrell and wife, Donna, of Morganton; daughters, Janice Brewington and husband, Ray, and Amy Michaels and husband, Chris, all of Morganton; grandchil- dren, Holly Page and hus- band, Josh; of Hickory, NC, and Wendy Kimbrell, Paige Kimbrell, Justin Austin, Dakota Michaels, and Alora Michaels, all of Morganton; great-grandchildren, Connor, Tanner, and Lucas Page, all of Hickory; siblings, Herman Hoyle and wife, Bea, of Bostic, NC, Bernie Hoyle and wife, Nell, of Shelby, Ruby Hutchins of Morganton, Lil- lian Greene and husband, Amos, of Kings Mountain, NC, and Robert Hoyle and wife, Irene, .of Bostic. The funeral was held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, July 18, 2010 at Burkemont Baptist Church with Dr. David Mills and Rev. Eddy Bunton offici- ating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. He was born on De- cember 8, 1946, in Pittsburgh, Pa., son of the late Helen and Frank Byme of Scottdale, Pa. and Chautauqua, NY. ; Kevin attended Staunton Military Academy and was a graduate of Scottdale High School, Scottdale, Pa. He earned a BA from the Penn- sylvania State University and MBA from Saint Bonaven- ture University. : Kevin had been Director of Institutional Services and. Data Processing at the Chau- tauqua Institution, Chau- tauqua, NY, and Director of the Physical Plant at Belmont Abbey College, Belmont, NC, and Bethany College, Bethany, WVa. He is survived by a daugh- ter, LTJG Claire Gunnison, USN, of Virginia Beach, Va.; a son, Nicholas Byme of Chapel Hill, NC; former wife, Cynthia. Congleton Byme of Belmont, NC; brothers Dennis Byrne of Camp Hill, Pa., and Terrence ‘Byrne of Baltimore, Md.; and a sister Virginia B. Hines of Montclair, Va. He was pre- ceded in death by his brother Michael Byrne of Greens- burg, Pa. Kevin was well known at Lake Chautauqua for his sail- ing skills, collection of an- tique wooden boats and his . many good friends. He was a member of the architectural team that did the first major restoration of the 100 year old Historic Athenaeum Hotel lo- cated at the Chautauqua Insti- tution. JULY 12: Officer Bryan McGinnis said that Brittany Padgett of Shelby was driv- ing her 1996 Honda on Gold Street and rear-ended a 2006 Suzuki operated by Sandra Deal Gettys, 114 Wells St. doing $7,000 damage. Padgett said that she was attempting to get a bee out of her car when the accident happened. Gettys was pulling off from the stop sign, according to the report. Cleveland County EMS transported Gettys to Kings Mountain Hospital. JULY: 12: Officer K.L. Hamrick said that a vehicle operated by Waymond Sims of Millbrook, AL, struck a 1997 Honda operated by Tinica Adams of Lincolnton on I-85 at 161 doing $2,000 damage. Injured were trans- ported to Kings Mountain Hospital. JULY 12: Cpl. K.L. Put- nam said that a 2002 Chevy operated by Sherry Black of Shelby was damaged $800 by a hit and run driver on the ‘Highway 74 bypass. ‘Black said a vehicle pushed her off the road and into a guard rail which was dam- aged $1500. Cleveland County EMS transported injured to Cleveland Re- gional Medial Center. JULY 14: Cpl.
