Barris Funeral Home Donna Sloan Kings Alexander - - ‘a special friend we will miss’ Charles Alexander, as architect and developer, and his wife, Ruby, Kings Mountain's first female gen- -eral contractor, made their mark for many years on the business, religious and residential community of Kings Mountain. The late husband and wife team developed and built many properties, including the residential area Gold Run, and Alexander was the archi- tectural designer for Macedonia . Baptist Church plus many homes Staff writer and office buildings in town. Theirs was a close-knit family. At his death August 25, 2010 at age 88, Charles and his beloved wife of 55 years are together again. Alexander had been in declining health but his love was returning to Regal Ventures Creative Ministries downtown where he at one time operated a real estate office and spend- ing time with his son, Reg and family and daughter, Cindi Wood and family. The Alexander building is across the street from the Kings Mountain Post Office and Charles liked to comment about the spacious building not far from the old post office, reminiscing about serving as Kings Mountain Postmaster for 25 years before he began in earnest his ex- pertise in design. Long active in First Baptist Church, he chaired the building committee for the new sanctuary, or- ganized the church's first Boy Scout troop and was active in numerous civic clubs. He doted on his three grandchildren and great-grandchild and the family news of another great- grandchild in the near future and also a soon-to-be grandson- in-law. "My Dad had been winding up things of this world for the last four to six weeks. His body was collapsing speedier each day. Sunday, we were able to transfer him to the Kings Mountain Hospice," said Reg. We lost a great teacher. We lost a beloved post mas- ter and real estate entrepre- neur. We lost a friend. Edith Morgan passed away on Thursday at her home in Grover. She was a friend and a great lady. The last time I saw her was a couple of years ago. She was getting ready to celebrate her 90th birthday and was still doing her own housework and cooking, still mowing _her own lawn and occasion- ally riding that lawnmower of hers to the post office to pick up her mail. She was still making quilts out of old scraps and aprons out of old feed sacks, still tending her flowers and her bottle tree. She was still hosting par- ties and get-togethers. She may have been short in stature (about four feet) in her golden years, but stood tall, in my eyes, as a great lady. She had a pretty great life and I’m sure I’m not the only one who loved to hear her stories. Growing up the fifth of seven children on her fam- ily’s 100-acre farm in Grover’s countryside, Edith not only finished high school, but earned two years of university studies at Berry College in Rome, Ga., where she worked off her tuition doing chores around the campus.
