The Kings Mountain Herald Barbara Jean Barnett KINGS MOUNTAIN - Barbara Jean Barnett, 76, died November 2, 2010, at Kings Mountain Hospital. She was born in Cleveland County on September 10, 1934, to the late Neal Thomas and Josie Bobbitt Barnett. The funeral service was conducted by the Revs. Jimmy Maney, Tim Barrett: and Daryl Lewis at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Sisk-Butler Funeral Home Chapel, Bessemer City. Interment was at Mountain Rest Ceme- tery. Jerry Wilson KINGS MOUNTAIN -° Robert Gerald “Jerry” Wil- son, 83, died Nov. 3, 2010 at Kings Mountain Hospital. Dakota Goforth KINGS MOUNTAIN - Dakota Lee Goforth, infant son of Jennifer Michelle Go- forth and Stacy Wells, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. The funeral service was conducted Friday, Nov. 5, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Midview Baptist Church. Rev. Robbie Stinson officiated and inter- ment was in Midview Baptist Church Cemetery. Craig Griffin KINGS MOUNTAIN - Craig Eugene Griffin, 31, died November 7, 2010. He was born October 30, 1979 in Cleveland County to Freida Blanton of Kings Mountain and the late George Eugene Griffin. Craig was a member of True Gospel Holiness § Church. He had tibhive hii biggest heart and loved everybody. A funeral service will be conducted by the Revs. Leann and Rick Chapman and Rev. Mike Whitaker at 2 p-m. Thursday, November 11, 2010 at True Gospel Holiness Church in Kings Mountain. .The family will receive visi- tors 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Interment will be at Mountain Rest Cemetery. Craig is survived by his mother and companion, Freida Blanton and Kenny Cogdill; brothers, Brandon Griffin of Kings Mountain, Bradley Griffin of Blackburg, SC; sister, Angel Christopher of Gastonia; grandmother, Is- abel Cook of Kings Moun- tain; uncle, Keith Blanton of Kings Mountain; and best friend, Ashley Moss Collins of Kings Mountain. Hie was born | in Cleve- ila nid | County 0 the #1 a te {Rufus Ls James and Flossie Ledford Sanders and was also preceded in death by his wife, Syble Wells Sanders; brothers, Rev. James Sanders, Fred Sanders, Boyd Sanders and Arshel “Bill” Sanders and sisters Cloe Bowen and Ruby Con- ner. A member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, he retired from Foote Mineral Com- pany after 22 years and also retired from Kings Mountain District Schools. He served in the United States Army, Pa- cific Theatre, during World War II. A devoted husband, father and Paw Paw, he was also known to many as a master carpenter. During the Cold War era he built the first fallout shel- ter in Cleveland County and then helped to construct shel- ters for others. He also spent several years in Hofuf, Saudi Arabia doing construction work that he was commended for. The family would like to extend a special thanks to White Oak Manor for their special care. Surviving are his sons, David Sanders and wife, Debbie, of Gaffney, SC and Steve Sanders and fiance, Teresa Melton of Kings Mountain; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010 at 4 p.m. at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel at Harris Funeral Home. Rev. Don McSwain and Nathan Sanders will officiate. A very active member of East Gold Wesleyan Church in Kings Mountain, she served as a Sunday School teacher and Vacation Bible School Director and was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary and Women’s Mis- sionary Society. A prayer warrior with a strong faith in her Lord, she believed in Him unconditionally. She was a homemaker and stay at home mother. . Surviving are her sons, Buddy W. Connor of Wilkes- boro, Gene Connor and wife, Marietta of Danville, Va. and Nelson Connor and wife, Hallie, of Kings Mountain; daughters, Grace C. Weaver and husband, John of Shelby and Kimberly Connor-Mc- Cormick and husband, Steve, of Clover, SC; 12 grandchil- dren, 18 great grandchildren and one great-great grand- child; and numerous other relatives. The memorial service will be held Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010 at 1 p.m. at East Gold Street Wesleyan Church. Rev. Daryl Lewis will officiate. In 1880, (according to oral tradition) 20 years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, the first Mt. Zion church was established for Christian fellowship in a building located on Pied- mont Avenue across from the Kings Mountain Herald building. The church relo- cated to West King Street in 1916 and. between 1916- 1974 underwent tremendous growth, according to a * church history. On Nov. 3, 1974 Pastor J. S. Norris, the church family and friends marched hand in hand from the corner of Watterson and Parker Streets and the new church was filled to capacity for the dedication of the building to God. In January 1987 the cur- rent Pastor C. A. Feemster was called to serve and was installed in May 1987. Under his leadership the church welcomed assistant pastors Rev. Ernest Simons, Rev. Lamont Littlejohn, Rev. William Sims; MD and at present Rev. Raymond Gardin and many ‘sons’ born into the ministry included Lamont Littlejohn, current pastor at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church; Brian Floyd, current pastor at Fully Committed Baptist Church; Carl Smith, current pastor at Williamsville Brooklyn AME Zion Church and Ray- mond Gardin, current assis- tant pastor at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Under the leadership of Rev. Garvin, Rev. Howard Shipp, current city councilman from Ward I, began his ministry. The church’s first sister, Annie Thombs, began her ministry under the leadership of Rev. J. H. Littlejohn. Numerous choirs lead in the music ministry of the church and the youth min- istry is strong. There are also Ridgecrest retreats, marriage enrichment classes, after school homework and tuto- rial/educational programs for children, and seniors enjoy Golden Hearts and Golden Jubilee celebrations, Family & Friends weekend, Laymen League and Women’s Mis- sionary Ministries are only a few of the programs and events in the Family Life Center and church sanctuary.
