Christmas...
Christmas comes but once a year, but a white Christ-
mas is an extremely rare event for those of us in Kings
Mountain.

Cleveland County Schools
is working on a new phone
notification system that will
alert folks in the event” of
emergencies, school cancella-
© tions, delays or closings.
“We’ve had that ability to
share information by phone,
but the way it was designed
you couldn’t do it quickly.
When this system is in place,
within a matter of just min-
utes, we can notify all of our
staff, students (and parents),”
Dr. Boyles said. “Before we
had been using existing phone
lines and now we’ve con-
tracted with some organiza-
tion where we use their phone
lines and consequently we
. can make all of those phone
_ calls simultaneously.”
In the past, the superin- .
tendent said they would have
to use 500 or 600 phone lines
within the district to make all
of the calls, but with this next
generation of the “phone
tree”, CCS will be able fo
make 16,000+ calls in a mat-
ter of minutes. Messages will

be delivered by multiple
means: text message,
recorded voice message, to
home phones and/or cell
phones.
“We're testing the large
calling with our employees
and hopefully by the end of
the year, we’ll have that in
place. We may have it during
this winter season if every-
thing goes well,” he said.
Dr. Boyles added that CCS
is also utilizing social net-
working sites like Twitter and
Facebook to keep the public
updated on district happen-
ings.
- “We’ve really worked this
year to try to improve our
communications. We’ve re-
designed the website,” he
said. “We're continuing to ex-
pand our hardware use and
technology use. This last year,
we were the first in our region
in terms of 'student-to-
‘computer ratio and first place
in Internet connectivity for
our schools. We're really try-
ing to continue that expansion
of computers, smartboards
and all of those things that are
instructional tools.”
All in all, so far, the 2010
school year is looking bright.

The two angels who grace the entrance gate at
Kings Mountain's Mountain Rest Cemetery ap-
pear to be the guardians of the cemetery in the
pose they present to visitors to the cemetery.
The angel statues were given to the cemetery
by Harris Funeral Home funeral directors Eric
Wright and Brad Tate in memory of Dorus Ben-
nett, the city’s cemetery superintendent for
many years, and B.S. (Sonny) Peeler, popular
musician and retired Elmer Lumber Company
