Page 8A Sports Wingate Coach Joe Reich to speak at Touchdown Club Awards Night Wingate University head football coach Joe Reich will speak at the third annual Kings Mountain Touchdown Club Football Awards Night Thursday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. at B.N. Barnes Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. No meal will be served. d The event honors the members of the 2010 Kings Mountain High School foot- ball teams who combined for a 14-8 record. The varsity Moun- taineers finished 7-5 overall and tied for second in the Big South 3A Conference and the junior varsity team went 7-3 overall and second in the Big South. A number of awards and trophies will be presented, and the Touchdown Club’s scholatship recipient will be announced. Trophies to be presented include best defensive line- man, best linebacker, best defensive back, Dr. George Plonk Outstanding Defen- sive Player, best receiver, best offensive back, Fred Plonk Blocking Award, most outstanding offensive player, Iron Man Award, and KMTC Weightlifter of the Year: Varsity players that were selected to the All-Big South 3A Conference team will be recognized and certificates of participation will be given to players. Coach Reich recently completed his 10th season as Wingate’s head coach by leading the Bulldogs to their first-ever appearance and The Kings Mountain Herald first win in the NCAA Divi- sion II playoffs. The Bull- dogs finished 9-3 overall. Reich has compiled a 66- 43 record at Wingate after taking over a team in 2001 that finished 1-10 the year before. His 2010 team broke 35 school records on offense and special teams. The Bull- dogs won their first playoff game ever 63-41 over More- house College. The 2010 senior class posted 31 career victories, which is a school record. This year marked the fourth year in a row that the Bull- dogs’ senior class has matched or exceeded the previous senior class’s record. Under Reich’s leader- ship, Wingate has been ranked in both the AFCA Swimmers beat Shelby, Kings Mountain swept Shelby, Hunter Huss and Crest in a three-way meet last Tuesday at Neisler Natato- rium. The KM girls posted 125 points to edge Shelby with 122. Crest scored 29 and Huss 20. The KM boys far out-distanced its competition, scoring 118 points to 58 for Shelby, 43 for Huss and' 20 for Crest. Alyssa White led the way with wins in the 200 meter individual medley (2:31.63) and the 100 meter breaststroke (1:18.60). Before taking over the Wingate program, Reich spent eight years as an assis- tant coach at the University of Buffalo. He was an assis- tant coach at his alma mater, Gettysburg College, and was a graduate assistant coach at Georgia Tech under Bobby Ross. Reich was defensive co- - ordinator at Buffalo during its transition from Division I-AA to Division I. His Buf- falo defense recorded the school’s first shutout in 10 yeas during the 1999 season. During the 1996 season Buf- falo achieved its first-ever national ranking in the Sports Network Top 25 poll. His 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2009 teams received votes in: the final NCAA polls and his 2010 team probably will as well.
