The Kings Mountain Herald RE Wednesday, January 12, 2011 PoLick Log James Abernathy Grover - Norman James Abernathy, St., age 74, a res- ident of 103 Meadowlark Lane, Grover, passed away - Saturday Saat 8,2011 at Cleve- land Re- 8 gional Medical i Center, oy Shelby, kd NC. : H Ze a am w as born in Kings Mountain, NC, son of the late Wilburn Norman. and Vada Pruitt Abernathy and was preceded in death by a son, Norman James Abernathy, Jr. Mr. Abernathy graduated from Kings Mountain High School and attended San Bernardino Community Col- lege in California, West Vir- ginia University in West Virginia and North Florida Academy of Real Estate in Jacksonville, Florida. He re- tired from AT&T after a dis- tinguished 30 year career, serving numerous positions within AT&T departments in the capacity of executive management. The last ten years of his’ career with AT&T, Mr. Abernathy served as district operations manager of AT&T’s Special Services of Florida. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, a member of the American Legion Post 155 in Kings Mountain, a life member of the Tele- phone Pioneers of America and a member of the Senior Golfers of Cleveland County. Survivors are his wife of 53 years, Mary Ellen Baker Abernathy of Grover, NC; one daughter, Mary Cather- ine Schmieg of Plano, Texas; grandsons, Shawn, Michael and Matthew Schmieg of Plano, Texas, and James Patrick Abernathy of Wilson, North Carolina; granddaugh- ters, Mary Kristen Jester and husband Jason of McKinney, Texas and Kimberly Aber- nathy of Wilson, North Car- olina. Barris Ffuneral Home Evans Carroll, Sr. KINGS MOUNTAIN - Evans Carroll, Sr. age 77, resident of 809 Kather- ine Ave., died | January 7.52011 at his home. He was a native of Cleve- land Co., son of the late Fin- ley Oates “Doc” and Essie Wilson Carroll. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, James Carroll. He was a retired maintenance manager, having worked for Akers Motorline, Bowman Transportation, Burgess Transportation and Carolina Western Trucking Co. Mr. Carroll served in the United States Army during the Korean War, receiving the Purple Heart. He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, White Shriners, Fairview Masonic Lodge #339 and the Maintenance - Council. He loved fishing and was a jack of all trades. He was a loving husband, father and grandfa- ther. Survivors are his wife of 59 years, Betty Jo Leigh Carroll; one son, Rocky Car- roll and wife Mary; brother, Gene Carroll and wife Phyl- lis; sister, Ethel Mauney; grandchildren, Ladd Carroll and fiance’ Lisa, Benji Car- roll and wife Misty, all of Kings Mountain; and great- grandchildren, Ashton and Amberlyn Carroll and Jesse. A graveside service and interment was held Sunday, January 9, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain. Rev. James Lochridge officiated. Visitation was immedi- ately following the graveside service at Mountain Rest Cemetery. Born in Duval County, Florida, he was son of the late Billy Gene Hawkins, Sr. and Shirley Elizabeth Nowlin.
