The Kings Mountain Herald Wednesday, January 19, 2011 s Church briefs : Meditation ‘...And the greatest one another is by often the case in the politics of reli- Chicken Pie Supper at Dover Baptist of these is love’ Food, water, sleep and exercise; we have been told over and over again that we have the need for each of these resources in our life in appropri- ately measured amounts. Of course, we have other important needs as well, and one of them is for love. Let’s face it, humans are social beings and we have a hard time being healthy in mind and body if we are in total isola- tion. Through her research, a family therapist discovered that infants have as much need to be touched as they do to be fed or to sleep. In fact, this thera- pist determined that the pores in the skin are places on our bodies through which we pass along feelings of warmth, comfort and encouragement and that we all have the need to be hugged on a daily basis, with four hugs a day required for survival, eight for maintenance and twelve for growth. But let’s face it; love may be expressed in more ways‘than by skin- loyalty. Herschel Hobbs was a prominent South- ern Baptist pastor, who had a pro- found influence on other Baptists through his writ- ings and denomi- national service. Dr. Jeff Hensley While he was still Pastor serving in Okla- Kings Mountain homa City, Hobbs Baptist Church joined a small group of commu- nity clergy from various denomina- tions who had decided to develop a plan that would enable them to work together across denominational lines. The hope was that they would be able to support community projects of mu- tual interest without having to worry about their doctrinal differences. When the group completed their plan, they issued a press release stat- ing the details they had worked out and announcing the initiation of the plan with a citywide rally that would gion, other members of Hobbs’ de- nomination were not pleased that he was involved with the project because they thought he was going to compro- mise his beliefs. The criticism of these detractors was so vocal that it made the news lo- cally and nationally, compelling a re- porter from another city to call a prominent pastor in his town to ask for a statement on the controversy. This pastor happened to be a good friend of Hobbs, and his response to the reporter was, “This is the first I have heard about it, but if Herschel Hobbs is involved in it then I’m sure it’s all right.” That pastor did not know anything about the program that Hobbs was involved with, but he was devoted to his friend and trusted him enough to support him. One of the blessings that we should all be able to experience in the local church is the gift of love, both God’s love and the love of fellow human be- ings. This love can certainly be ex- pressed through the human hand of fellowship, but also through the same Dover Baptist Church, 1501 Polkville Rd., will sponsor al TN Ge da 3 a chicken pie supper Saturday, Jan. 22, from 5-7 p.m. Eat in : the fellowship hall or take-out orders.
