Hipp Madison Massey and hus- ARRESTS FEB, 8: Erica Brannon, 19, Stuter, 34, Charlotte,expired KINGS MOUNTAIN - Furman Eugene Gladden Sr., 83, of 800 Hillside Dr., died Feb. 13, 2011 at Kings Moun- tain Hospital. He was born in Cleveland County to the late Furman Gladden and Edna Paysour Gladden and was also pre- ceded in @ death by < hiiicis b 4 brother, Don Gladden. An active member of Res- urrection Lutheran Church, he served as a former council member and sang in the choir for 40 years. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a mem- ber of the Lions club. He re- tired from Fiber Industries in Shelby. * Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Mildred Rippy Glad- den of the home; sons, Fur- man E. Gladden Jr. and wife, Marcia King Gladden of Greensboro and Steven D.Gladden of Kings Moun- tain; daughter, Kim G. Gold St., died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2011 at his home. Born in Spartanburg, SC, he was son of the late Rufus Edward and Annie Cox Hipp and was also preceded in death by a sister, Doris John- son. He retired from C&C Scrap Metal after 25 years of service. He was a loving hus- band, father and grandfather. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Hazel Childers Hipp; daughters, Pam H. After leaving teach- ing, her professional career in- cluded being the - first personnel director at Rucker Rosenstock Department Store, the first registrar at Richard "Bland College and working for the Petersburg Department of Tourism. She was an active member in her community and churches, Tabb Street Presbyterian and New Venture Christian Fellowship. Hicks in running for scholarship Kings Mountain High School senior Erica Hicks is one of three finalists for an all- free Park Scholarship to attend N. C. State University at Raleigh. Other finalists are Joey Brian Blake, senior at Hunter Huss High School, and James Derrick East, senior at Forestview High in Gaston County. The Park Scholarship isval-"~ ued at $80,000. It pays for tu- ition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, travel and personal expenses, a $2200 computer stipend, grant oppor- tunities and a chance to study abroad and more. Some 50 Park Scholars are awarded each year and the three area finalists will learn if they are selected by March 1. But- ler said that Vicky Vickers White of Shelby apparently experi- enced a medical problem at the wheel of her car on US 74A. The vehicle left the road four times during a 1 1/2 mile stretch be- fore it struck a highway sign. Cleveland County EMS trans- ported the driver to Kings Mountain Hospital for observa- tion. Flea and Farmer's Market Beginning Tuesday, March 1, the Cleveland County Fairgrounds will host a flea and farmer's market on the midway from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. every Tuesday through Sept.13. Evening line dance classes Tuesday evening line dance classes will be held March 1-29 at the Patrick Senior Center in Kings Mountain from 6-7:30 p.m. Register a the front desk at $20 per person and packets will also be available for a small fee on the first day KM Military Park to conduct Kings Mountain National Military Park will begin conducting prescribed burns within the next week, weather permitting. Burns planned for this year include the Browns Mountain area of the park and two units along the park’s northern boundary. During Feb- ruary, March and April three burns are expected to be completed for hazard fuel reduction, habi- tat restoration and cultural landscape restoration. Rangers advise that it is difficult to give an exact day for burns as weather conditions will dictate the time in which the burns will take place. To insure safety, visitors will be prohibited from the burn areas. Trails near any area being burned will be closed until the area has been se- cured and made safe. Visitors to the park can ex- pect to see a burned area until the native grasses and legumes start to regenerate after the burn.
