Howze shoots record 61 at KMCC King Mountain’s Gary Howze had one of those days that most golfers never have - and he will never forget - Sunday at Kings Mountain Country Club. Howze toured the 18-hole, par 72 layout in 11-under-par 61 to set a new course record. The previous record of 62 was shared by many individuals including his father, John, and brother, Mitch. Howze shot a 31 on the front side and 30 on the back, with no bogeys. He had seven birdies and eagled holes one and ten. He was playing in a foursome with Rusty Bumgardner, Jared Spicer and Jamie Case. Howze’s previous low round was a 63 which he shot at KMCC several years ago. “It was just one of those days,” " Howze noted. “I putted the ball extremely well and kept the ball in play all day.” Howze hit every club well, in- cluding a demo driver he was try- ing out. “I started off each side well,” he noted. “I made a couple of sav- ing par putts. I holed the short ones and I made some real long ones that you get from time to time. “It was just one of those things ~ that came out of nowhere.” Kings Mountain High will be |* ¢ Howell gets win, save in series with St. Johns Kings Mountain sophomore pitcher Jeffry Howell picked up a win and save in relief ap- pearances against Division I power St. Johns last week at GW's John Henry Moss Stadium. . Howell came in to pitch the final 1.2 in- nings on Friday, giving up only one hit and striking out four to get the victory. On Saturday, Howell came on to pitch the final two innings and struck out three to get a » save in an 18-11 Bulldog victory. He retired the side in the eighth and struck out the final bat- ter to nail down the win. Childers suffers loss to Washington Kings Mountain’s: Morgan Childers suf- fered her first loss of the season in last week- end’s Husky Invitational Tournament in Seattle, Washington. The tournament was in- terrupted by and finally cancelled because of heavy rains. On Friday, Childers went the distance in a 2-1 win over Oregon State. She gave up five hits and struck out seven. ; She went the route with a four-hitter and 10 strikeouts in a 2-1 victory over Portland State. On Saturday, she worked 4.1 innings and took the loss in a 10-7 game against Washing- ton. \ Childers now stands 19-1 on the season.
