My library includes a four-
volume “encyclopedia of the
Bible that dates back to 1899
and was the work of a number
of scholars who made impor-
tant contributions to the study
of the Scriptures during the late
19th and early 20th centuries. I
acquired the set from one of
my professors after he retired
from Southeastern Baptist The-
ological Seminary, and when I
received it the old leather
spines were crumbling and the
cover boards were beginning to
fall off, even though the
sewing of the-pages and the
pages themselves were still in
good shape.
After using the books my-
self for some years, I finally
decided that they needed to be
rebound if I was going to keep
them, so I sent them to a book
binder that I have dealt with
ever since I worked for the
Baptist Book Stores during my
college days. Now there are not
many books that I think are
- worth paying to restore, but
books that have both continued
usefulness and sentimental
value seem to qualify.
When I shipped the books
for repair, I remembered my
mother’s
- favorite
| Bible,
{ which
1 was the
1 last book
that I had
sent to be
restored.
Liik:e
many
faithful
hris-
tians, my
mother
reads her
Bible
through every year and she has
several copies of the Bible in
various translations. This year
she is reading one that I used as
a text for an Old Testament sur-
vey class I taught. As a mother,
she seems to be enjoying read-
ing this particular Bible both
because it is God’s Word and
because it was given to her by
her son, and I share the senti-
mental warmth of knowing that
she appreciated my gift and is
using it daily.
Despite the fact that my
mother has many Bibles, there
is one King James copy that
her parents gave her that is

probably closest to her heart,
especially since my grand-
mother died a couple of years
ago. It is a Bible my mother re-
ceived before she married my
father and it was embossed
with her maiden name; but it
was falling apart. Because it
was filled her notes and was
also sentirnentally important, I
sent it to. the book binder for
her and had it rebound in
leather, complete with her
name on the front exactly as it
had been before.
There are many reasons
why a copy of the Bible can be
important to us, but I believe
that the most significant one is
the precious truth that is found
within its pages. One example
of what I mean comes from the
139th Psalm, which was the
text for my sermon this past
Sunday. The spiritual truth that
we learn from this Psalm is that
God knows us personally and
intimately, having “searched”
us out, and even more impor-
tantly, the PRESENCE of God
is always with us and watching
over us. This is one reason why
I turn to the Bible daily — to be
reminded that God loves me
and is always with me,
