Wednesday, April 6, = GARY STEWART ‘Sports Editor Kings Mountain pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat a good North Gaston team 1-0 in a Big South 3A Conference softball game last Tuesday night at Lan- caster Field #3. Sophomore southpaw Reagan Childers of the Mountaineers hooked up in a pitcher’s duel with Sidney Mitchell of the Wildcats as both ladies pitched S-hitters. Childers struck out nine in the first complete game per- formance of the year for a Mountaineer in BSC play. Childers also got the win- ning rally going when she singled to center to lead off the bottom of the sixth. She was sacrificed to second by Taylor Faris, who was safe when the North first base- man dropped the ball. Emily Bell went in to run for Childers. An out later, Caroline Chambers also gained life on an error and the bases were full of KM runners. After fouling off several pitches Caitlyn Braunns hit a routine groundér to second which was booted and Bell scored. Childers issued her sec- ond walk of the game to North's leadoff batter in the seventh, but buckled down 2011 to strike out the next two bat- ters. Molly Morrow singled to right to put runners on first and second but Ashley Roper’s grounder to. third . was handled cleanly by KM freshman Molly Short, who stepped on third for a force out to end the game. Kings Mountain’s de- fense played exceptionally well to back up Childers’ strong pitching performance. Caroline Chambers and Tori Glass combined for a double play following a single by Mitchell in the fourth and Childers retired the next six batters in a row, including three by strikeouts, before is- suing ‘the leadoff walk to Burnell in the top of the sev- enth. Braunns led the KM plate attack with 2-for-3 and Faris, Chambers and Childers added a hit apiece.
