Church Cemetery, Shelby.

friends Thursday, April 7,
from 5-7 p.m. at Harris Fu-

times at the home, 4908 Bar-
rett Road, in Kings Moun-
tain.

School. She loved to read
and study her Bible and
loved to cook. She was a for-
mer nurse, loving wife,
mother and grandmother.

Bob Grindell and wife,
Wendy, of Kings Mountain
and Kevin Grindell'and wife,
Lerryn, of Aiken, SC;
daughter, Winona Latona

she was preceded in death by
a brother, Donald Canipe
and sister, Kimberly White.
Surviving in addition to
her mother are her husband,
Jason Lee Scates; daughter,
Chasity Barlow of Raleigh;
brother, Clifton Canipe and
sister, Pamela Ware of Kings
Mountain.

The Cleveland County
Democratic Party endorsed
Betsy (Mrs. Steve) Wells of
Kings Mountain as a candi-
date for 10th Congressional
District Chairman at the
Party’s first-ever convention
in Kings Mountain Saturday
at Joy Performance Center.
Wells, a former Party
chairman and longtime ac-
tive in county, state and na-
tional Democratic activities,
was nominated by long time
friend Dean B. Westmore-
land.
“Service and experience
count and Betsy has both,”
said Westmoreland.
Convention delegates en-
thusiastically endorsed the
candidacy of Mrs. Wells to
become chair of the Democ-
rats’ Tenth District at its con-
vention May 14 in Valdese.
They selected delegates to
attend the convention and
carry forward local support
for filling the seat, not held
by a Cleveland Countian
since the 1980s.
Delegates also elected a
new slate of officers headed
by Davy Lowman of Shelby
* to a two-year term as party
chair succeeding Bobby
Rauf. A Cleveland County
native, Lowman is a college
instructor with prior experi-
ence in party organization
and political campaigns.

Mountain was reelected sec-
ond vice chair. Other new of-
ficers are Caroline Dedmon
of Shelby, first vice chair,

Named to the N.C. Dem-
ocratic Party Executive
Committee were Lowman,
Brenda Lipscomb of Grover,
Leatha Lockhart of Grover,
Willie McIntosh of Lawn-
dale, Steve Padgett of Casar,
and Betsy Wells of Kings
Mountain.
The convention unani-
mously endorsed a resolu-
tion to be forwarded to the
May 14 district party con-
vention opposing the consol-
idation of existing voting
precincts. Also unanimously
approved were resolutions
recognizing the longtime
service to the party and com-
munity by Dean Westmore-
land and Rev.. Eddie
Lockhart, both of Grover,
and both given standing ap-
plause. Also honored by
unanimous resolution pre-
sented to her family was the
late Arrie B. Ellis of the
Rippy precinct, former
mayor of Earl.

ognized delegates from the
Kings Mountain precincts.

planned for April 17
The 25th reunion of the
John and Britter Wells family
descendants will be held Sun-
day, April 17, at Dixon Pres-
byterian Church Fellowship
Hall at 630 Dixon School
Road, Kings Mountain, at 1
p.m. The family meeting will
begin with a pot-luck dinner
followed by a short business
meeting. The group will ride
to the old Wells Cemetery, lo-
cated on the Hughes farm on
Stewart Road, to view the
tombstones of the original
‘members of the family.
Family members are asked
to bring documents, wills, pic-
tures, étc. for display. All de-
scendants are urged to attend
to share the food, fellowship,
memories, laughter, and fam-
ily genealogy.

John and Britter: Wells
were among the earliest set-
tlers in this area, buying land
in the Dixon Community from
a land grant issued by the
King of England prior to the
Revolutionary War. Their
cabin was used to treat the
wounded from the Battle of
Kings Mountain. It’s currently
the oldest residence in Cleve-
land County and is depicted ~
on the historical mural on the
Plonk Dept. Store wall in
downtown Kings Mountain. It
is presently owned by Ms.
Elizabeth Stewart on Stewart
Road. The old Wells Ceme-
tery, where John and Britter
Wells are buried, is on the
Betty Hughes farm located on
Stewart Road, Kings Moun-
tain. :
