MSD owners
invited to
Summit
The Design Committee of Mountaineer Partnership Inc. is
hosting a Downtown Design Summit 1-4 p.m. Thursday,
~ April 28, at Mauney Memorial Library. The by-invitation-
only event is devoted to property owners located in the city’s
Municipal Service District (MSD), city staff, city gouncil and
the Partnership’s design committee.
The committee, chaired by local architect Ken Piiioes.i is
set to unveil a focus project for downtown design improve-
ments.
Pflieger says the event is a joint effort between the City of
Kings Mountain and Mountaineer Partnership, the downtown
development group which has been working with the North
Carolina Main Street Program since the city was awarded in-
clusion in the elite program last year.
Design improvements to be addressed at the Summit are
based on the “Picture Downtown” community exercise con-
ducted last year and the downtown strategy plan which was
co-sponsored by the city and First National Bank in 2007.
The Summit will build on last year’s visit by the North Car-
olina Main Street resource team and its final report.
In the “Picture Downtown” exercise, community mem-
bers were handed disposable cameras and were asked to take
pictures of things downtown that they liked, hated and would
change if they could.
“A lot of the proposals we’ll be addressing are based on
the community’s input as part of that exercise,” Pflieger said.
Mountaineer Partnership Executive Director Adam Hines
will give the keynote address.
“MPI will briefly review what has transpired since devel-
opment of the 2007 Strategy Plan in the design realm and
bring the participants up to date on what the Design Com-
mittee and its various partners have been working toward as
part of the MPI work plan for 2010-2011, Hines said.
A panel discussion involving current MSD property own-
ers, NC Main Street design and planning staff, and city ad-
ministration, will focus on downtown design challenges and
opportunities.
Panelists who have committed to appear at the Summit
are Steve Killian, Economic Development Director and Plan-
ning Director for the City of Kings Mountain, MSD property
owner Scott Campbell, MSD property owner David Faunce,
MPI’s Chair of the Economic Restructuring Committee Steve
Padgett, NC Main Street Designer Lauren Malinoff, and NC
Main Street Landscape Designer Lew Holloway.
Since December, the design committee, staffed by volun-
teers Mitch Johnson, Bobby Horne, Camiel Bradshaw, Ber-
nice Chappell, Ben Hubbard, Marcie Campbell and Pflieger
