Page 2A B OBITUARIES The Kings Mountain Herald Wednesday, October 12, 2011 / Luther Philip Baker III KINGS MOUNTAIN - Luther Philip Baker III, 59, res- ident of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on Monday, Oct. 10, 2011 at Kings ‘| Mountain | Hospice | House. lH e was born on Oct. 22, 1951 in Cleve- land County to Ruby Hughes Baker and the late Luther Philip Baker, Jr. and was grandson of the late Dr. and Mrs. L.P. Baker, Sr., and Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Hughes. A graduate of Kings Moun- tain High School, he studied History at N. C. State College. He was employed for 30 years by Cleveland County as a com- munications technician. Recog- nized as an avid photographer, he taught photography at Cleveland Community College for many years. He was a life- long member of Resurrection Lutheran Church fulfilling many positions within the church including the church choir and church treasurer. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his sister, Mary Ellen Abernathy of Grover; niece, Cathy Schmieg, Plano, TX; aunts, Peggy Fulford and Mary Louise Baker; uncle, Bob Hughes and wife, Sue; numer- ous cousins and life-long friends. Cochran, 69, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, at Gas- ton Memorial Hospital in Gas- tonia. The funeral service was conducted Friday, Oct. 7, at 4 p.m. in Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel at Harris Funeral Home. Marc Caskey officiated and interment was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Clyde Conner KINGS MOUNTAIN - Clyde Ezra Conner, 86, of 102 Heather Lane, died peacefully * on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, at Rutherford Regional Medical Center in Ruther- fordton. Born in Cleve- Ian 'd County, he was the son of the late Charli¢ Pinkney Conner and Florence Morrison Conner and was also preceded in death by brothers, Fred Conner, Johnny Conner, Ernest Conner, and sis- ters, Pearl Bates, Ethel Neal, Eunice Lovelace, Bertha Blalock and Ada Conner. He retired from the textile industry and was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force during World War II where he served as an aircraft mechanic in the 23rd Fighter Squadron. Surviving are his wife of 53 years Joyce Price Conner of the home; sons, Mike Willamson and wife, Pat, of Mount Holly and Greg Conner of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter, Kathy Conner Henry and husband, Chris, of Orcasglsland, Wash.; brothers, James Bill Conner and wife, Hazel of Greenville, SC, and Gene Conner of Blacksburg, SC; sisters, Betty Bolin and Bonnie Bolin, both of Blacks- burg,SC; and grandchildren, Benjamin Cody Henry and Austin Elijah Henry. The funeral service was conducted Saturday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m. at Ollie Harris Memo- rial Chapel at Harris Funeral Home, Rev. Dennis Petro offi- ciating. Parris Funeral Home Johnny Wray Conner KINGS MOUNTAIN - Johnny Wray Conner, 78, of 102 Battleground Road, died Sunday, Sept 25, 2011, at Whi i te was born on June 6, 1933, in Gaston County to the late James Ervin Conner and Ethel Cabe Conner and was also pre- ceded in death by his sister, Betty Payne and brother, Clyde Ervin Conner. A carpenter, he served in the United States Navy. He was a man who loved his family and was a member of Temple Bap- tist Church in Kings Mountain. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Donnie Vee Cooke Con- ner of the home; sons, Johnny Conner and wife, Janice of Kings Mountain and Donnie Conner and wife, Dawn of Gas- tonia; daughters, Lynn Williams and husband, Danny of Six Mile, S.C., Sandra Ran- dolph and husband, Mickey of Boiling Springs, N.C., Sheryl Myers and husband, David, of Kings - Mountain, and Gina Hamrick and special friend, Matthew, of Pensacola, Fla.; special children, Patty, Dennis, Harold, Chris and Eric; sister, Garnell Bryant of Cherryville; 12 grandchildren and 12 great- grandchildren. The memorial service was held Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 12 noon in Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel at Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain. Rev. Jimmy Maney and Rev. Doug Ramsey officiated. Herndon, Sr. KINGS MOUNTAIN - William Mauney Herndon, 79, died Friday, October 7, 2011, at home in the company of his family. After making a coura- geous de- cision to forgo for his cancer, with his family and friends. " Born and raised in Kings Mountain, he graduated from Blue Ridge School and was a 1953 graduate of Davidson College. He then returned home to work for more than 50 . years as a co-owner of JE Hern- don Company with his brother, James E. Herndon, Jr., at the company founded by his father James E. Herndon, Sr. He truly loved his company and its employees, and he was a fixture there almost until the day he died. He adored Kings Mountain and his family’s place in its heritage. He and his family traveled widely, visiting six continents. He was an avid antique automobile collector. He was a faithful Mason and enjoyed researching his fam- ily’s genealogy. He is survived by his de- voted wife, Marilyn Herndon, of the home; 10 children; and his brother, James E. Herndon, Jr. of Atlanta, GA. He was pre- ceded in death by his wife, Jean Lynch Herndon, and is sur- vived by their children, Dr. William Herndon, Jr. and his wife (Bobbie) Barbara of Char- lotte and their children, Alexan- der and Andrew; Virginia Herndon-Baker and husband Charles of Portland, OR, and their children, Garth and Char- lotte; Robert Herndon of Port- land, OR, and David Herndon . of Wilmington. He was also preceded in death by his wife, June Rhyne Herndon, and is survived by her children, Spears Mullen, Jr. and wife Alyce of Raleigh and their chil- dren, Catharine Palmer (Scott) and Peter; Julia Hart and her husband Lewis of Chappaqua, NY, and their son, Lewis III; Patrick Mullen and his wife Deborah of Cornelius and their son, McKay. In addition to his surviving wife, he is survived by her chil- dren, Charles Hamilton and his wife, Amy, of Shelby and their children, Natalie and Ben; Wayne Hamilton and his wife, Leigh, of Greensboro and their son, Nathan; and Virginia Hamilton of Gastonia. A visitation was held at the home at 112 Herndon Farm Road, Kings Mountain, on Monday Oct. 10 from 6-8 p.m. The memorial service was held at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, 201 N.
