North Elementary School stu-
dents have been putting the char-
acter trait of kindness and service
- to others in action. First grade
teachers, Nicole Smith and
Johnna Wyte, organized a-can
. food drive during the month of
December to benefit families in
our community.
"This has been a whole school
effort and we have collected over
600 items to help start our own
North Elementary School food
closet," said Molly Blanton, prin-
cipal of North. "The students and
families of North have shown a
great deal of kindness to others."
"Melissa Cox, 4th grade
teacher assistant, and 4th grade
teachers, Sherri Bailey, Penny Ca-
nipe, and Denise McGirt, had
missionaries from Honduras visit
their classes during the month of
December. Students learned about
the country, schools, and the cul-
ture of Honduras. Students in 4th
grade are collecting school sup-
plies to send to children in the
area for Christmas. This project
not only helped students learn
about another country but it was
also a way to help others."

With every season change we
make plans for the pastures. Ask-
ing ourselves..." What needs to be
grazed before the next grass
be bush hogged?" "How many an-
imals will this pasture support for
how long?"
We raise cattle and sell meat
but at the heart of any decent
grass-based operation there has to
person who is always thinking
about the managing of the grass.
For us, this is our bread and but-
ter. Without healthy pastures we
don't have healthy grass and this
would effect the meat. The cooler
temperatures have us transporting
animals to be sure they graze
through the remaining summer
grass growth and maximize the
resources we have in each pas-
ture, grass!
The temperatures have begun
to fall and this means we will be
getting the fall grass growing
right now. The soil is getting a bit
dry since it's been over 2 weeks
now that we've had rain but there
is still a lot of summer grass that
needs to be eaten before the pas-
tures are really ready for the fall
growth. Right now there are many
pastures that still have a good 12"
or so of summer season grasses
that have yet to be grazed. Yes,
the herds have been through them
already this summer but they
grew back!
In order for the fall grasses to
come in at their fullest we need to
have these 12" of grass taken
down so the cooler season grass
will not be squeezed out. They
need room! What to do? The first
growing season?" "What needs to
be a dedicated grazier. This is the °

Thinking about grass...
thing we always think of is which
herd is nearby to graze them? If
we don't get them grazed we will
have to bush hog those pastures. ;
This is the least desirable method!
A lot of the summer grasses
also went to seed, which means
that they reached their full matu-
rity and seeded out before we got
* a herd on there to graze them
down. Now, the summer seed
heads are standing dry and not as
yummy as they are just before
they reach maturity and they are a
bit less nutritious than when still
in the earlier growth stages.
This week Brian, Dad, and
Tanner brought 20 steers from the
Blacksburg farm to the Kings
Mountain farm to help with the
grazing that needs to be done here
on these pastures. [ have about 10
more to bring over this week. In-
creasing my numbers here will
make it more likely that they will
graze these summer grasses down
to a level that the fall growth will
be maximized. If they don't eat it
then they will trample a lot of it
and this is just as good. The tram-
pling of the tall grasses leaves the
organic matter of the plants right
there on the soil. They will break
down and add to the quality of the
dirt there.
I won't leave them here all
winter. After they have done their
job here we will be on horseback
again to move them onto another
pasture where the fall growth has
come in. Come see who is here
during our open farm day and
tours on Friday November 25!
Here's to greener pastures,
Shelley
