Page 4A ii MEDITATION Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam Although I haven’t seen them anywhere lately, the letters WWIJD seemed ubiquitous for a while, appearing on hats, t- shirts, bracelets and other * items. Most of us know by now that those letters represented the phrase “What would Jesus do?” and they were designed to help encourage people to make ethi- cal choices that faithfully repre- sented Jesus to the world. Composer Johann Sebastian Bach was also known for sport- ing four initials, but he didn’t wear them on his clothing; he scrawled them on his musical compositions. These initials were not the same ones we saw on the garments of our youth a few years ago, but they were similar in that they exhibited a message of faith to all who saw them. The letters were AMDG, which stood for the Latin phrase “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,” which means “To the Greater Glory of God.” ‘Bach felt so strongly that his music was meant to glorify God that he put those initials at the top of his manuscripts. There was a time when ini- tials like those would have been found carved on church build- ings, inscribed on organ pipes, and etched into both stained glass and furniture. Although Latin phrases are not our forte these days, and I suspect that few of us know people who utter them often, there is still a widespread desire to inscribe the things that we produce. We may not typically use Latin phrases to do this, but we still like to dis- play some unique mark that re- flects our views. What I like about the phrase that Bach chose to employ with ‘his work is that it is a reminder of what all believers should be doing with their lives. We all ought to be living and working “to the greater glory of God.” This is really why we were created; so as to share life and living with our Creator, or to live our lives for the sake of our Creator — to live for the glory of God — and to do so be- cause we love God and we know God loves us. This kind of shared love seems wonderfully illustrated by the story of a pastor who no- ticed that there was a specific fa- ther who always came to church accompanied by his small son. One Sunday morning the boy began to cry loudly and un- The Kings Mountain Herald | www.kmherald.net Dr. Jeff Hensley Pastor Kings Mountain Baptist Church comfortably. The father lifted the boy caringly, carried him to the back of the sanctuary, and stoodithere rocking him tenderly and speaking to him gently until he quieted down. There was no sign of embarrassment or frus- tration on the father’s face. There was only love for the hurting child. Telling the story of this inci- dent later, this pastor said, “In that moment, while I was preaching, I was preached to, for in that incident I heard God speaking to my heart and say- ing, ‘That is the way I love you.” When we have experienced that kind of love, we want to live Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, or to the greater glory of God.
