Read — Unite — Survive: Community read of
“The Hunger Games” celebrated with the follow-
ing events:
Feb. 15 - March 15 - A canned food drive will
be held at all three county library locations dur-
ing normal business hours. Everyone in “The
Hunger Games”, in the country of Panem is starv-
ing. Donate food to help fight hunger in Cleve-
land County. Donations will go to the Senior
Center Food Pantry, the Bliss Center in Lawndale
Food Pantry, and the Kings Mountain Crisis Min-
istry.
Feb. 15 - March 15 - Art exhibits, one for stu-
dents housed at the Kings Mountain Art Center
and one for adults housed at the Cleveland County
Library, Mauney Memorial Library and Spangler
Branch Library. In “The Hunger Games” trilogy
- (“Catching Fire”), Peeta finds a way of getting his
anger out about the hunger games in drawing and
painting.
Feb. 16, 7 - 9 p.m. - A “Hunger Games” trivia
night sponsored by the Mauney Memorial Library
will be held at 238 Cherokee Street Grill, 238
Cherokee Street. In Collins’ trilogy, those who -
don’t know are first to go.
Feb. 15 - 21 - A discussion on survival in the
woods, “How to Eat in the Woods”, by Chris
Huffman will be held at the Spangler Branch Li-
brary. Time of the discussion is to be announced.
In “The Hunger Games” trilogy, the wisdom the
“tributes” needed to survive in the woods kept
them alive. /
Feb. 20, 4 p.m. - A book discussion will be
held at Mauney Memorial Library, “Let’s Talk:
“The Hunger Games®”.
Feb. 28, 6 p.m. - A conversation book discus-
sion with Noel T. Manning, II, “From Book to
Movie” will be held at the Cleveland County Li-
brary.
March 3, 10 am. - 9 p.m. - 5 a adventure
course will take place at Gardner-Webb Univer-
sity. Registrants will be paired randomly as “Trib-
utes” and assessed on how quickly and accurately
challenges are completed. Teamwork will be im-
portant. Just like in the trilogy, activities will test .
the balance, physical coordination, communica-
tion, problem solving skills, acrophobia, and de-
termination of the “Tributes”. Cost: $10.00 - All
“Tributes” will receive a t-shirt.
March 3, 6 - 8 p.m. - A student art exhibit re-
ception will be held at the Kings Mountain Art

March 5, 6:30 p.m. - A discussion of govern-
ment, “Could We Become Panem?” by Mitch
McIntosh from Belmont Abbey College will be

March 10, 3 p.m. - “Run For Your Life” 5K,
downtown Kings Mountain. Race begins and ends
