Former Mountaineer basketball
star Brian Brown of VMI had a big
night in the Keydets’ loss to Gardner-
Webb Saturday night at Paul Porter
Arena in Boiling Springs.
Browns, a freshman guard, came
off the bench to lead the Keydets
with 15 points. He hit his first four
shots from the field and canned three 3-pointers.
Brown, who had been averaging 8.4 minutes per
game, played 34 minutes against the Bulldogs. He hit 6
of 11 of his field goal attempts and grabbed two re-
bounds.
Other college notes:
Kings Mountain senior Cole Moore has seen two re-
lief appearances for Erskine’s Flying Fleet but hasn’t en-
tered into a decision. He has worked one-third of an
inning with one walk and one strikeout...
Lander University junior relief pitcher Brantley
Blalock of Kings Mountain has been red-shirted for this
season due to an early season injury, giving him two
more years of eligibility...
Several other former Kings Mountain baseball play-
- ers will begin college action on Friday, including Jeff
Howell at Gardner-Webb, Cody Austin at Charleston
Southern and Ryan Leach at UNC-Wilmington.

Natalie Lutz with the trophy she won
at the Racquet Club of the Gorofings
Open.
Natalie Lutz, 11, of Kings Mountain won the
Racquet Club of the Carolinas Tennis Open held
in Gastonia February 10-12, 2012. Over 70 play-
ers from North Carolina and South Carolina
competed in the USTA Sanctioned Event.
Natalie won the girls 12 and under singles,
and her sister, Maddie, made the semifinals in
girls 16 and under singles. Natalie is a fifth
grader at the Kings Mountain Intermediate
School. She is currently ranked 33rd in the State
of North Carolina and 159 out of 1358 players -
in the Southern Region.

ots managed only 6 of 13.
North led 8-5 carly but KM rallied to trail by only 16-15 at the
half. It was 25-24 going into the fourth period.
Kings Mountain fell to 7-1 in the Tri- Lonly Conference East
Division and 9-1 overall.
Tiffani Thompson led the KM offense with 13 points. Kelsey
Farmer added 8, Shaniya Portee 5, Nastajah Hutchens'3, Maikeia
Seright 2; Jessica McClure 2 and Gwen Hopper 2.
Kings Mountain won its 9th straight game the previous Mon-
day over Lincolnton, 41-17.
The Patriots jumped out front 10-5 in the first period and led
15- 8 at halftime. and 3 i going into the fourth period.
Thompson led the way with 22 points and Seright added 6.
Tamara Adams had 3, McClure 3, Taylor Myles 2, Portee 2,
Brooklyn Odums 2, and Hopper 1.
Hopper, Hutchens and Odums sparked the KM defense.
Kings Mountain’s boys ran their record to 5-5 overall and 3-5
in the division with a 44-34 win over Lincolnton Thursday.
KM fell behind early 14-9 but outscored Lincolnton 16-3 in
the second quarter to take a 25-17 halftime lead. KM led 36-27
going into the fourth quarter.
Demetrius Hill led the Patriots with 19 points. Zavier Roberts
added 10, Omar Petty 6, Will Wilson 3, Cooper Short 2, Jacob
Skidmore 2 and Jacob Merchant 2.
The boys fell to North Lincoln 53-43 Thursday. Hill scored 15
pints, Skidmore 10, Roberts 6, Wilson 6, Petty 5, and Cedric Wil-
son 1.

_It was much the same situation Friday at Forestview as
the Lady Jaguars started out in a pressure defense and forced
numerous turnovers. They built a 19-7 first quarter and 39-
18 halftime lead. Kings Mountain played much better 1 in the
second half.
Dai Dai Roberts led the Mountaineers i in scoring with 13
points and Petty had a double-double with 12 points and 12
rebounds.
“Our girls gave a great, effort from start to finish against
an experienced top ranked team,” Coach Myles said. “I am
very proud of them.”

JVs beat Crest,
Kings Mountain High’s JV basketball team defeated Crest
51-42 Tuesday at Parker Gym before ending their season Fri-
day at Forestview with a 41-39 loss.
The Mountaineers jumped out to a quick 14-4 lead over
the Chargers and were on top 28-14 at the half. But the
Chargers outscored them 32-23 in the second half.
Josh Sherer had a big day for the Mountaineers with 15
points, five rebounds, six assists and six steals. Isaiah Cole
contributed 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four
steals. Xavier Johnson grabbed 10 rebounds, Nelson Mc-
Clain had seven rebounds and blocked four shots.
Forestview stormed from behind in the fourth period to
defeat the Mountaineers Friday. KM led 10-7 after the first
period, 18-17 at halftime and 32-24 going into the fourth
quarter but managed only seven points over the final eight
minutes: N
