Cansler St. by the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics investigators, the Kings Mountain Police Department and the SBI landed a Kings Mountain couple in jail. Michael Brock Ellis, 37, was charged with one count of possession of metham- phetamine and given a $500,000 secured bond. A short time later officers executed a search warrant at the residence and located an active methamphetamine laboratory. On May 2. investigators served . additional charges on Ellis after processing a meth lab- oratory at his residence. Ellis was charged with possession of precursor chemicals and manufacture of methamphetamine and given a $50,000 secured bond. Alice Pennington Gilliam, 38, 5323 Jack- son White Road, identified by officers as girlfriend of Ellis, was charged with assault on a government official causing injury, re- sist, delay, obstruct law enforcement officer; drunk and disruptive, injury to personal property and second degree trespassing and received a $75,000 secured bond. A press re- lease from Sheriff Alan Norman said that *’ Gilliam was arrested after she attempted to sneak back into the methamphetamine labo- ratory to destroy evidence. During her arrest, she assaulted one of the officers and had to be restrained by force.” Norman said in the press release that “once at the residence officers made contact with Mr. Ellis who was in the back yard of the residence. Upon seeing officers walk into the yard, Ellis got up from a lawn chair and quickly walked toward the officers. As two officers talked with Ellis two other officers walked over to where Mr. Ellis had been seated and saw what appeared to be a clear plastic bottle containing methamphetamine. Officers field tested the suspected item and RT vs, found that it tested positive for methamphet- amine.” Norman said that on April 30 narcotics in- vestigators received a citizen complaint that Lester Jay “Pete” Hawkins was selling methamphetamine from the outbuilding be- hind his residence at 2301 Brookfield Drive,” Grover. Hawkins denied selling drugs and al- lowed officers to search his outbuilding where officers found a shotgun and assorted drug paraphernalia. Investigators stopped their search and had other investigators to apply for a search warrant to include the en- tire outbuilding as well as the primary resi- dence and out buildings on the property. A short time later the narcotics unit executed a search warrant for the house and located ad- ditional drug paraphernalia, a methampheta- mine “cooking” recipe, five more guns, marijuana, digital scales, US currency and methamphetamine. At the time of the arrest Hawkins was given no bond because he was on probation for possession of methamphetamine. Officers charged Hawkins with posses- sion with intent to sale or deliver metham- phetamine, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of drug para- phernalia and possession of marijuana. Law enforcement agencies throughout the county have found and decontaminated five meth labs so far this year. “It’s a growing trend. Drug users and dealers are finding the easy and cheaper way to make and sell a product, although it’s ex- tremely volatile and harmful to their health,” said Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman. Det. Sgt. Lisa Parker said that Kings Mountain police have been working collab- oratively on the drug case with the Sheriff’s ‘Department and Special Bureau of Investi- gations since October 2011.
