He was born in

Phillips Lawson and was

three brothers and one sister.
Mr. Lawson was retired
from Sadie Mills in Kings
Mountain after 20 years of
service. He served in the
United States Navy during
World War II on the USS
Blackhawk in the Pacific
Theatre. :

William “Bill” Lovelace, 89,
resident of Grover and re-
cently of Summit Place in
Kings Mountain, peacefully
passed away May 27, 2012
at Hospice House of Kings
Mountain. :
He was born in Cleveland
County to the late William
Greenberry and Lula Allen
Lovelace and was also pre-
ceded in death by brothers,
Sylvester, Chivous, Roscoe,
Sidney and Frank Lovelace
and sister, Marsilla Proctor.
He was a mechanic and re-
member of Fist Baptist
Church of Grover and en-
joyed spending time with his
family and working in his
garden.
Surviving are his wife of
68 years Barbara Van Dyke
Lovelace of Kings Moun-
tain; son, Edward Lovelace
and wife, Brenda of Kings
Mountain and grandchildren,
Todd Lovelace- and wife,

Mountain. She was a beauti-
ful young woman, interested
in drama and the arts. She
attended the Plonk School of
Creative Arts, starred in sev-
eral high school and college
plays, and won competitive
reading awards. In high
school, she was voted “best
looking” in her senior class. -
She attended Virginia Inter-
mont and Lenoir Rhyne Col-
leges, graduating in 1943
with a degree in primary ed-
ucation. Working with chil-
dren was one of her joys, and
she taught elementary
school in North Carolina for
5 years.
Lib and her husband Jim:
met in Kings Mountain in
1939, and were married Au-
gust 4th 1943. As an Army
wife at assignments in the
United States and Germany,
Lib volunteered for women’s
club and chapel activities,
and for her daughter’s school
functions. After settling in
Alexandria, VA in 1969, she
was a member of the Army
Officers’ Wives’ Club of the
Greater Washington Area,
Vienna Newcomers’ and the
DAR. She also held several
offices and chair positions in
the Quartermaster Wives’
Club, including president.
Lib’s faith was a very im-
portant part of her life. She
was a member of the Ft.
Myer Chapel congregation
for over 40 years, where she
attended Sunday School and
Bible Study, and served as a
member of the Parish Coun-
cil. She also coordinated the
chapel Meals on Wheels pro-
gram, chapel hostesses, and
an annual cookie drive for
D.C. area soldiers who
worked Christmas holidays.
Lib was a passionate
bridge player. She learned to
play in college, and later be-
came a member of the Amer-
ican Contract Bridge
League, earning her Life
Master points at a very early
‘age. She and her partners
won at local, regional and
national levels.
Lib loved spending her
summers at Lake Montonia
with family and childhood
friends. Her grandfather was
one of the builders of the
lake, and she and her hus-
band Jim own a cabin there.
She was a member of the
Kings Mountain First Pres-
byterian Church and an avid
supporter of the Kings
Mountain Little Theatre.
Lib passed away at her
home in Alexandria, VA on
Monday, May 14, 2012 of
congestive heart failure. She
was preceded in death by her
older brother Hank Plonk,
her younger sister Lenora
“Nook” Plonk Lackey, and
her niece Libby Lackey
Powell. She is survived by
her loving husband of 68
years, retired Army Colonel
Jim Mercer, her daughter
Peggy Mercer of Alexandria,
VA, her brother, R.G. Plonk,
Jr. and his wife Frances of
Shelby, her nephew Robert
Lackey who is living in Dal-
las, TX, and her nephew Tim
Powell and grandnieces
April and Stephanie Powell
of Lawndale.
Lib’s life was celebrated
on Tuesday, July 31 at 11
a.m. at the Ft. Myer Old Post
Chapel in Arlington, VA. In-
terment was in Arlington Na-
tional Cemetery following
the service. Visitation was at
Everly-Wheatley ~ Funeral
Home in Alexandria, VA
from 4 until 7 p.m. on Mon-
day, July 30, 2012.

Ski boat catches
fire at Moss Lake
A ski boat idling near
a dock on Moss Lake
erupted in fire Saturday
gvening.
Firefighters from Oak
Grove Volunteer Fire De-
partment put out the
blaze.
No one was injured in
the incident. :
It was the first time the
boat had been put in the
water this year. Firemen
said two men and a
woman were inside but
while the boat was idling
they saw flames come up
from underneath the en-
gine and attempted to put
out the fire with a fire ex-
tinguisher.
