This week a young
woman in my congregation
gave birth to a new baby.
When I visited with her, she
was bubbling over with joy
about the new life that had
come into her own. Any
thoughtful, sensitive person
would have been movéd by
this mom’s love and devo-
tion for her newborn, for it
was one of those events that
make us deeply aware of
what a fragile treasure life
really is, with potential for
great warmth, joy, hope,
creativity, friendship and
generosity. Unfortunately,
one does not have to live
very long until it becomes
apparent that the joy-filled
aspects of life are frequently
threatened or destroyed by
life’s other side, which is
characterized by qualities
such as anxiety, bitterness, ,
greed, anger and hostility.
The Bible presents us
with a rich pageant of life
that is lived in community.
Its stories, hymns, proverbs
and prophetic speech seem
to cover the entire range of
human feelings and experi-
ences. It presents the story
of a people who puzzled
through the riddle of life
from the midst of life, and
came to the same conclu-
sion Eliot did: “There is no
life outside of community;
that is, outside of life shared
with others.” Furthermore,
and I think distinctly so, the
Bible suggests that there is
no such thing as genuine
community ‘that is not also
lived and experienced in the
praise and presence of God.
This is a reality that I fear
has been lost in our world
today, driven as we are by
consumerism and power. It
also seems to have been lost
in many of our churches, for
if the church is anything, it
should be a community of
people living, serving and
praising God together. A
careful reading of the Bible
seems to indicate that any
. community like this is based
About the business of
incarnating God’s purpose
first and foremost on a pat-
tern of divine initiative and
human response. To put it
another way, the church is
the sort of community it
ought to be when the people
who make it up are inten-
tionally living so as to align
themselves with the calling
and character of God, who
is ceaselessly active seeking
to create fellowship where
there is alienation, to recon-
cile where there is enmity,
and to redeem where there is
bondage.
I know that this may not
make much sense to many
believers these days; driven
as we are by the desire to
satisfy .and comfort our-
selves, but it seems to me
that communities of faith
are healthiest and happiest
when they choose to be
about the business of incar-
nating Gdd’s purposes in
their own lives. I pray that
this will be increasingly true
of the churches here in
Rings Mountain. -
