In 1964 and for many years after that, we wrote our stories on an old manual Un- derwood or Royal typewriter, then after proof reading handed it over to a linotype operator to type it all over again. We later advanced to electric typewrit- ers, but still turned the copy over to some- one else to type it again and transfer the type to lead which was tightened in 8-col- umn format into a huge metal plate and mounted on the printing press.
