November 28, 1963 PROUD: {0 be a part of this history FROM Page 1 here more than 100 years! We're proud of that accomplishment, and we're proud of them. You can learn more about these amazing people in Emily Weaver's story elsewhere in this special section. As for us, Wendy and I are very proud to have been associated with The Herald the past four years. Economically, it couldn't have been a worse time to invest in a busi- ness when we wrote the check to buy the paper on August 1, 2008. However, the community has responded favorably and we're still here. In fact, our family in this "family-owned" business has grown as our son Wayne joined us here this year. The Herald and its sister papers The Cherryville Eagle and Belmont/Mount Holly Banner News are three of the few pa- pers around to remain locally and family owned. And most dailies have turned to new ownership from investment groups to survive. We remain proud of the fact that The Herald has reestablished local, family ownership to its masthead. We think it's im- portant that people who run this newspaper live here. Complaints and suggestions for how we can shape a better paper go straight to the owner. By the way, that changed just slightly this year as illness forced me to downgrade my own status to that of colum- nist (and unpaid at that!). The title of pub- lisher is now worn by Wendy, who gets help from Wayne, Lisa Zyble in operations, Rick Hord in sales, Emily Weaver as editor, Kathy Reynolds, Lib Stewart and Gary Stewart. One hundred and twenty five years is a very long time for a business to sustain it- self, let alone succeed. While we can't take credit for any but four short years of that, we are very proud to be just a small part of that history.
