August 1, 2012 The Kings Mountain Herald | www.kmherald.net Page 6B Civil War Photography exhibit opens today The Cleveland County Memo- rial Library will host the opening reception for the “Freedom, Sacri- fice, Memory: Civil War Sesqui- centennial Photography Exhibit” today, Aug. 1, at 6:30 p.m. in its Genealogy - Local History Room. The reception will open with remarks by library director, Carol Wilson. Civil War era music will be provided by the Log Cabin String Band and light refreshments will be served. In observance of the 150th an- niversary of the Civil War (1861- 1865), the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources (www.nccul- ture.com) has organized the “Free- dom, Sacrifice, Memory: Civil War - Sesquicentennial Photography Ex- hibit” to travel the state from April 1, 2011 through spring 2013 as part of its commemoration (www.nc- civilwarl50.com). Visitors will see women, who served as Confederate spies, well- known Confederate generals, re- enactment images of soldiers and battles, and more. The battlefield, home front, African Americans, and women all are reflected in the exhibit. A notebook accompany- ing the exhibit will offer sketches of the generals, of African Ameri- cans fleeing bondage, a woman whose home became a hospital, and other glimpses of lives from that turbulent time. ; In observance of the sesqui- centennial of the Civil War (1861- 1865), the Cleveland County Memorial Library is presenting a number of events open to the pub- lic.
