Page 4B KM Middle Patriots beat Play Shelby for Tri-County title The Kings Mountain Herald | www.kmherald.net October 31, 2012 Crest B GARY STEWART Sports Editor Big defensive plays in the final five minutes of the game sparked Kings Moun- tain Middle’s Patriots over previously undefeated Crest 14-8 Wednesday at Sid Bryson Stadium on the Crest High campus. The win moves the Patri- ots, 5-2 overall, into the con- ference championship game at 5 p.m. today at Shelby. The Patriots had the Dragons backed up inside the 15 yard line when the hosts went into punt forma- tion on a fourth and 12. Under a heavy rush by the KM defense, the Crest punter’s foot actually missed the ball and the Patriots re- covered it at the two yard line. TE Trailing 8-6, it took KM three plays to score with Jake ‘Merchant sneaking over from the two and Dar- ian McClain running the two-point conversion with 4:20 left. The Dragons’ offense, aided by a personal foul penalty against the Patriots, made things interesting by driving to the KM 40 with a first down. But KM’s Kavin Mosley intercepted a pass at the eight yard line with 2:39 remaining, and behind the power running of McClain and Trevon Wilson the Patri- ots were able to run the clock out. Wilson gained 33 of his 41 yards in the fourth quar- ter, including 17 during the final possession to help the Patriots nail down the vic- tory. “The kids played real well,” noted Patriot coach Tim Gunn. “McClain and Corey Tate really stepped up their game on defense. Our backs ran hard and con- . trolled the clock and our de- fense created a big turnover inside their five yard line.” Both of the earlier touch- downs occurred on the first two possessions of the game, with the Dragons’ two-point conversion giving them the lead until KM’s last-quarter heroics. Kings Mountain won the opening coin toss and de- ferred to the second half. A squib kick rolled to the Crest 29 where the Dragon return man was hit hard as he tried to pick up the ball. The Pa- triots recovered it, and on their third play Mosley made a remarkable leaping catch of a pass from Darren Burns to put KM on top 6-0. The lead was short-lived, though, as the Dragons’ Ta- vian Brintley scored on a 52- yard sweep of right end on their first offensive play. Quarterback Casual Morris ran the conversion. After that, Crest made it into KM territory only once until its final drive of the game. Kings Mountain drove to the Crest 19 and 44 in the second quarter, to the 16_in the third quarter and the 26 in the fourth but lost the ball on downs each time. The KM offense kept the ball for all but three plays in the third period, with Crest going 3-and-out on its only possession in the final minute. Wilson finished with 41 yards rushing and McClain 24, and Mosley caught three passes for 51 yards and Mer- chant three for 60 to lead the Saturday, November 10th 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Central United Methodist Church 113 South Piedmont Ave., Kings Mountain Yard Sale starting at 7am! They lost a 19-6 deci- sion to the Blue Devils in a non-division game to open the season. “We have to contain their running backs,” Gunn said. “They have a lot of speed.
