Bradley Byers Navy man was buried at sea in Virginia LYONS, NJ- Bradley Byers, 58, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012 at the Veter- ans Hospital in Lyons, New Jersey. Born Dec. 24, 1953, he was the son of the late Catherine Cleo Hicks Byers of Oxford, NC and Theodore Byers of Kings Mountain. Bradley was a US Navy veteran who completed the Cleveland Community Col- lege welding course, held many jobs as a handy person and was also em- ployed by the 4 Newark, NJ Fire Department as a fire- fighter. Due to his illness, he had been disabled for many years. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Ola Byers of Kings Mountain, and his parents, Catherine and Theodore Byers of Newark, NJ. He is survived by his son, Christopher Mercer of Kings Mountain; one daughter, La- toya Dickey of Newark, NJ; seven grandchildren, Christopher Jr, Christian, Diamond, Tanae, Aniha, twin boys Zakee and Zayear; one sister, Beverly Byers of Kings Mountain; one brother, Michael Byers of Gastonia; seven nieces and seven nephews and a very special friend Rose Floyd of Newark, NJ, and many, many other friends. At his children’s request, Bradley was honored by the military and given a Naval burial at sea in Virginia on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012. No more pain, no more problems, you are in God’s hands now. Willodean Timms Sang in choir for 59 years KINGS MOUNTAIN - Willodean “Deanie” Gilliland Timms, 78, resi- dent of 943 York Road, Kings Mountain, died Sun- day, November 25, 2012 at Kings Mountain Hospice House. She was born in Coopers, Ala., to the late Clyde and Mary Jane Driver Gilliland. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, David “Shorty” Timms, three brothers, and one sister. She was an active mem- ber of Oak View Baptist Church where she has been a member of the cheir for 59 years, and retired from K Mills after 20 years of serv- ice. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Surviving are her daugh- ters, Sharon T. Bridges and Mary Timms, both of Kings Mountain; sister, Carol Dut- ton of Montgomery, Ala; grandchild, Crystal Hyslop and husband Mike of Grover; and great-grandchild Michaela Hyslop. Cyrus was born January 1933 in Dunedin, Fl, to Cyrus T. | Falls Sr. ta n d Bonnie Ware, iw h o were origi- nally from Kings Mountain N.C. Cyrus’ early life was spent traveling between Dunedin and Kings Moun- tain working the growing seasons. He would pick cit- rus in the winter on the local orange groves, while spend- ing the summers on the fam- ily property North Carolina. In June of 1957 he mar- ried Cynthia Washburn and they have two children, Rus- sell and Wesley. Cyrus Joined the F.B.I. and worked from the Washington DC, Little Rock, Miami, Newark and Tampa offices as a spe- cial agent for the bureau. In 1990 after an impressive ca- reer with the bureau, Cyrus retired from the F.B.I. after thirty-six years to Tampa. Cyrus was a member of Van Dyke Methodist Church in Tampa. Cyrus is survived by his wife Cynthia and their chil- dren, and their grand chil- dren. Son, Russell Falls and wife Kathy and their three children, son, Clinton and wife Kim, and daughters, Al- lison and Brooke, all of Kings Mountain, NC. No charges filed against driver in fatal accident The driver of a car that hit and killed a pedestrian Nov. 9 on Goforth Road in Kings Mountain will not be charged. Trooper J. Prescott of the N.C. Highway Patrol said that Donald Eugene Blanton, 25, 1300 W. Gold St. Ext., was walking east in the west bound lane on SR 2014 and was struck in the roadway by a 2007 Chrysler operated by Charles Thomas Deaton, 24, 138 Green Meadows Drive. Prescott said that Deaton was traveling west on SR 2014. He said the “pedes- trian came to rest facing east off the right side of the road- way down in a ditch.” Esti- mated speed on impact was 35 m.p.h. in a 55 m.p.h. zone, according to the report. Prescott said Deaton said he did not see Blanton who was walking after dark to his mother’s home a few houses down from where he was killed on Goforth Road. The Trooper said Deaton said he thought he had hit a deer in the road. The driver turned around and returned to the scene. Blanton’s wife, Jyara, said that night her husband was upset and walking to cool off. She said his mother was with him and was trying to get him to get in her car. Both women said Blanton usually had headphones on when he walked and talked on his cell phone. The average trip length for North Carolinians was around 600 miles round trip. The day be- fore Thanksgiving is re- ported to be one of the busiest days of the year to travel. One way the NC De- partment of Transportation tried to decrease traffic prob- lems was by stopping all construction on interstates as well as most state and US routes on Tuesday, Nov. 20. According to AAA, statewide gas prices were an average of six cents lower than this time last year. “Prices on Wednesday, Nov. 21 were an average of $3.31, compared to $3.85 in Sep- tember. Kings Mountain was a little higher, with the aver- age gas cost being $3.39, while Grover’s gas averaged $3.07 throughout the holiday weekend.
