Lady Patriots win Tri-County Perfect 8-0 record, only four goals surrendered Kings Mountain Middle School's girls soccer team won the Tri-County Conference championship last week with a 8-0 victory over R-S Central. Tuesday's win closed out a perfect 13-0 season for the Lady Patriots. Kings Mountain defeated Shelby 5-0 in the first round of the playoffs. The team had a dominant season and a tight defense which allowed only four. The defense held their opponents scoreless in 11 of 13 games. Although some impact players will be moving on to bolster the high school team in 2014, coaches Tammy Harmon and Amber Crouse will have numerous players returning with hopes of repeat- ing their championship legacy in 2014. Kings Mountain will open state play at Patton High School in Morganton Friday at 6 p.m. High men’s cross country team has been honored for having the third highest GPA among all cross country teams in the state of North Carolina. Their achievement earned KMHS a $100 check from AAA of the Carolinas. Members of the team are Devon Ayscue, Will Boyles, Josh Brucker, Noal Cole- man, Jacob Edmonds, Collin Foster, Bailey Goodson, Alexander Greene and William McGill. High School boys basketball program will have a youth ‘basketball camp June 17-20 from 8 a.m.-12 noon. The camp is for rising third graders through rising eighth graders. Braves 9-10’s defeat Dodgers The Braves 9-10 year olds defeated the Dodgers 8- 6 Friday night May 3rd at the YMCA. The exciting back and forth game ended after 4 in- nings when regulation time expired. Charlie Melton was the starting pitcher for the Braves and turned in a strong 2 1/3 innings. Devon Pressley pitched the final 1 2/3 innings in-an outstanding relief perform- ance. The top of the 4th inning began with Dodgers leading 6-4. The Braves then loaded the bases with a walk to Scott Harrelson,a single by Carson Kinmon, and a walk to Charlie Melton, bringing Devon Pressley to the plate. Pressley worked the count to full before clearing the bases with an inside the park grand slam shotto the right/center field gap to give the Braves the lead. The Braves retired the first three Dodgers batters in the bottom of the 4th inning to secure the win. Lady Mounties drop 2 in BSC Kings Mountain High’s women’s softball team dropped one-run games to Crest and Forestview last week and was scheduled to host South Point last night in their final regular season game. ! The Lady Mountaineers will be opening state 3A playoff action Friday as the Big South Conference’s #3 seed, but the opponent was not known at The Herald’s press time. Kings Mountain lost a tough one Tuesday at Crest, 5-4. The Mountaineers got off to a great start in the top of the first when Emily Hester slammed a two-run home run. But Crest answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs, highlighted by Macy Ollis’ solo home run. Ollis hit a two-run homer in the third to put the Charg- ers ahead 5-2 before Kings Mountain cut the margin to 5-4 in the fourth on a two- - run double by Molly Short. The Lady Mountaineers threatened on other occa- sions but couldn’t score. They left nine runners on base. Short (2-for-4 with two RBIs), Leah Herndon (2-for- 3) and Hester (two-run homerun) led a seven-hit KM plate attack. Reagan Childers went the distance on the mound, al- lowing only five hits and fanning six. The * Jaguars managed only five hits but took ad- vantage of 10 walks to stay one-half game ahead of Ash- brook in the race for the fourth and final BSC playoff berth. Forestview’s regular season is complete and Ash- brook was scheduled to play Crest last night. Ashbrook needed a ‘win over the Chargers to force a tiebreaker game with Forestview for fourth. Braves 11-12’s win one, lose one The Cardinals shutout the Braves 3-0 in a 11-12 year old game last Tuesday night at the YMCA. Seth Kennedy picked up the win with a complete game one-hitter. He struck out 12. Blake Broome doubled and scored on a double by Kennedy in the fifth, break- ing a scoreless tie. Haddon Pruitt followed with an RBI single and Pruitt scored later in the inning. Jordan Goins went all the way for the Braves, surren- dering just three hits and fan- ning Six. John Harmon Melton had the lone hit for the Braves. The Braves defeated the Yankees 8-3 Friday night. Justin Osborne led the of- fense with two hits, includ- ing the go-ahead run to lead off the sixth inning. Joe Ruf- falo and Nathan Groves had doubles and Triston Hannon added a single. Silas Price pitched four innings, allowing no hits and striking out nine. Jordan Goins pitched the fifth in- ning to get the win. Joe Ruf- falo closed the game.
