Wednesday, May 8, 2013 The Kings Mountain Herald | www.kmherald.net Page 5A MEDITATION Dr. Jeff Hensley Pastor Kings Mountain Baptist Church This will be the final meditation I will write for the Herald, and when we come to the end of most ex- periences, we typically say “Goodbye” to the people with whom we have shared those experiences. Now the word Goodbye is a shortened form of the phrase “God be with you.” ‘My family and I have en- joyed living in the commu- nity of Kings Mountain for God be with you... nearly eleven years and the people we have met and known since we have been here have enriched our lives, and this is also why my wish for the people of Kings - Mountain is that God will be with you, which is why what I need to say right now is “Goodbye.” But perhaps there is more that needs to be added to this Goodbye. I have occasion- ally heard people talk about how all of us are “replace- ‘able,” and when it comes to specific tasks that are a part of a job, role, or responsibil- ity, I agree with this assess- ment. Let’s face it; somebody else can always fill our job. The only problem is that this is not altogether true, for even though other people can fill our shoes, or we can fill the shoes of those who filled a particular role before us, the reality is that every person is unique and has something unique to offer to others. My wife and I were blessed with three sons. We lost one of these sons to muscular dystrophy six-and- a-half years ago. Although we deeply love and celebrate life with the two sons we still have, neither of them can re- place the one we lost, for each person is unique and makes his or her own unique contribution to the lives of those whom they love. The length of one of these meditations is far too short, and the fear of leaving some- one out far too great for me to even attempt to list the names of the people here in Kings Mountain who have made their own unique con- tributions to my family and me. The best thing I can do is say “thank you.” Of course, as with life in any community, our time in Kings Mountain has not al- ways been easy. In fact, those who know my wife and me best know also that the last two weeks have been some of the hardest since our son’s death. But overall, our time in this community has been rich with joy and love, and we have celebrated the stages of life and family with many friends and neigh- bors. The people we have known here are unique, and even though my wife and I are moving on to a new church and a new commu- nity, both filled with new op- portunities, we will miss the people of Kings Mountain, and so I want to say “Good- bye,” or more accurately, “God be with you” to each and every person who has touched our lives for the good and in God’s name. May God bless you and keep you along the way. Amen. WALLACE: church is growing From page 2A from Richland NE High School in Columbia, SC, the University of South Carolina and Southeastern Baptist Seminary at Wake Forest. He met his wife, the former Emily Easterlin, at USC and they were married nine years ago. Mrs. Wallace holds a Master of Divinity degree from Southeastern Seminary. They have three children: Jackson, 6; Abigail, 4; and Annabeth, 1. The family lives in the Oak Grove com- munity. They came to David Baptist from Columbia, SC in February 2010. David Baptist Church was founded in 1939 and will celebrate its 75th year in October, a diamond anniver- sary. The church roll in- cludes 350 members and over half are in church on Sundays. The former church . burned in 1954-55 and coin- cidentally the tragedy hap- pened the night before a new pastor answered the call to serve the church. The fire originated in the boiler room of the church. It was during the pastorate of Rev. Hardin that the new church was built in 1955. In 2009 a tornado ripped through the Shelby Road area and blew out the win- dows in the present fellow- ship hall and main building of the church, missing the stained glass windows in the sanctuary. “We have a young and very active church,” said the pastor, who is the son of Ron and Charlene Wallace of Co- lumbia, SC. Both the pastor and his wife grew up in church. “Dad was a deacon and I felt a calling to preach at a young age and by my senior year in high school I could not put it off any longer,” said Wal- lace. Mrs. Wallace is the daughter of Greg and Gail Easterlin, formerly of Charleston, and now of Spartanburg, S C. Mrs. Wal- lace teaches a Sunday school class of elementary school children. Wallace will be contribut- ing a column in the Kings Mountain Herald.
