Kings Crosby gets 8-10 in wife’s killing A Kings Mountain man has been sentenced to eight to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to killing his wife in an August 2010 crime that shocked both sides of the family in the Mary’s Grove Church Rd. community near Cherryville. " Joseph Crosby and his wife Gaylain were report- edly arguing about money late on a Friday night and as the fight escalated it became physical and he strangled her, according to police re- ports and court testimony. Crosby called 911 imme- diately. Police arrived to find Gaylain, 51, dead at the scene. The couple’s daugh- ter, Tia, then 21 and a Uni- versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student, was home from college at the time and asleep in the house. Crosby, who is now 49, accepted a plea deal from the state and was sentenced by Judge Forrest Bridges. He will get credit for the time he has served since being jailed in August 2010. The crime stunned Gay- lain’s large family because the couple was thought to be very happy. Crosby had no prior criminal history, ac- cording to court records. The eighth of 11 children by Harvey and Margie De- gree of Cherryville, Mrs. Crosby graduated from Cherryville High School and N.C. Central University in Durham. She earned her master’s degree at Ap- palachian State University‘in Boone, where she met her husband. She was a clinical psychologist for Phoenix Counseling in Shelby. . Crosby was an Army and National Guard veteran who in 2010 had been laid off from his job. Police say KM man’s killer in custody, facing charges An 18-year-old Gastonia man is facing double murder charges in a May 31 shoot- ing that left a Kings Moun- tain man dead. Police say that Michael Tyler Walters was the gun- men who fired into the 1994 Honda ‘Accord holding Jerry Lenneil Richardson, 24, of Mountain, and Michael Anthony Rice, 24, of Gastonia, killing both men. Gastonia police say they aren’t sure of a motive but are piecing together infor- mation in the case to find out why the encounter erupted into violence. The victims were found dead in the car that was parked in a graveled area just off the road in front of the home Walters shared with his sister and other family members. Walter’s sister, who said her brother was home watch- ing her two young children, said he was acting in self-de- fense. “They came with guns. They came to rob him,” Shannon Lombardo said. “That’s what it looks like.” Walters has had at least one minor scrape with the law. In December 2001, he was charged with felony lar- ceny related to the theft of copper from an air condi- tioning unit. However, the Gaston County District At- torney’s Office dismissed that charge due to a lack of evidence. He has no convic- tions. Both Rice and Richard- son have criminal histories. Rice failed to appear in court on the day of his death for charges of violating his probation and a felony mari- Jjuana charge. Richardson was charged in April with resisting an of- ficer, identify theft related to financial fraud and running a red light. Those cases had not been resolved.
